SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Modern Heroes

Hi al! Decided to open another series where I'll be recreating compilations of "new wave" music released around the world during the 1980s (mostly early years). Discogs is a great resource and I had lots of fun browsing through the various artists compilations, then had a thought that I could recreate some of those using vinyl rips and CD sources. Of course there's little in a way of rarities for a serious fan but maybe for some it can be an interesting listen.

I've already posted my version of the compilation called "Machines" released on Virgin in 1980, so let's start with this one. I refreshed the tracklist a bit, including better-sounding files, so it should be a better one now - and a good one to kick off this thread.

Tracklist:

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Messages
Silicon Teens — Memphis Tennessee
Tubeway Army — Down in the Park
The Human League — Being Boiled
Thomas Leer — Private Plane
Dalek I — Dalek I Love You (Destiny)
John Foxx — Underpass
Henry Badowski — Making Love with My Wife
Fad Gadget — Ricky's Hand
Public Image Limited — Pied Piper
Karel Fialka — The Eyes Have It
Gary Numan — The Aircrash Bureau
XTC — The Somnambulist
Irmin Schmidt & Bruno Spoerri — Rapido de Noir
Crash Course in Science — Kitchen Motors

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Modern Dance

Postby Passing_Stranger » Fri Sep 29, 2023 1:17 pm

Guys, thank you so much for your kind replies! I'll surely contact you if ever in trouble regarding missing songs :)

I decided to make this series more frequent, so here's a new post - my version of the great K-Tel compilation from 1981 called "Modern dance". It featured some of the best - and a couple of more obscure - acts of the period, and can be seen as a representative of "New Pop". If only they'd make it more varied, though, instead of including two songs by the same band... As it is it's also something of a sampler for Virgin Records. Still, a great listen even to this day, works really good I tells ya.

Tracklist:

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Joan of Arc
Japan — Quiet Life
The Human League — Love Action
Heaven 17 — Penthouse & Pavement
Depeche Mode — New Life
Simple Minds — Sweat in Bullet
John Foxx — Europe After the Rain
The Cure — Charlotte Sometimes
Gary Numan — She's Got Claws
Visage — Fade to Grey
Landscape — Einstein a Go-Go
Fashion — Move on
Japan — Visions of China
The News — A World Without Love
Simple Minds — Love Song
Heaven 17 — Play to Win
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Enola Gay
The Human League — Open Your Heart

Another vinyl record I still have in my collection, so thank you for sharing.

Does anybody remember the Virgin Records vinyl release "Cash Cows", from memory it was only about £1.15 to buy at the time:

I've still got the original UK release, plus the second issue whereby Magazine replaced The Professionals (complete with an injucted sticker on the sleeve). I didn't realise that it was released elsewhere with a different track list.

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Modern Dance (Finn

Postby Passing_Stranger » Sat Oct 07, 2023 9:19 am

Hi guys! Another compilation here. The UK edition of "Modern dance" was good, but the one issued in Finland, of all places, to me really outdid its predecessor. It has more variety (features Ultravox, first and foremost :D ), but also features a healthy selection of European (mostly Scandinavian) acts - and nearly all of them are winners. Songs from Secret Service, Strasse and Adolphson-Falk are the tops, classics of Swedish take on "new musick" of late 1970s - early 1980s, and should be known better in English-speaking world. It also has The News' song - a lost near-hit of 1981, one of my fave synthpop songs of the year. Overall, a great value for money even now and I'm proud of myself for being able to present it :D

A necessary note, which I failed to mention earlier: most of those compilations featured unauthorised edits of the songs - you know, to cram 8-10 songs on one side of the vinyl LP isn't easy and stern measures had to be taken by the determined compilers. I have heard quite a few of such edits from mp3 rips of some of those compilations - those are atrocious most of the time. So I include 7" edits or album versions where appropriate. Hope this doesn't offend anybody.

Tracklist:

The Human League — Open Your Heart
Depeche Mode — Just Can't Get Enough
Japan — Visions of China
Secret Service — Flash in the Night
Heaven 17 — Penthouse & Pavement
Ultravox — The Thin Wall
Bagarre — Lemonsweet
Adolphson & Falk — Flashing Blue
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Joan of Arc
Ultravox — The Voice
John Foxx — Europe After the Rain
Simple Minds — Theme for Great Cities
The News — Audio Video
D.A.F. — Have You Decided What to Wear Tonight?
Fun Boy Three — The Lunatics (Have Taken Over the Asylum)
Strasse — Crash Slowly

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Double Art

Postby Passing_Stranger » Sun Oct 15, 2023 8:17 am

Mightily busy, but here's a new one - the Dutch compilation of "modern" music called "Double art" from 1981. It again is centered around the Virgin roster, but the songs chosen are mostly up-tempo so it's a sprightly listen featuring both now-classics and nice obscurities.

Tracklist:

Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Enola Gay
Devo — Whip It
D.A.F. — Der Räuber und Der Prinz
Simple Minds — I Travel
John Foxx — Underpass
The Human League — The Sound of the Crowd
Japan — Life in Tokyo
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Electricity
Devo — Girl U Want (live)
D.A.F. — Der Mussolini
Heaven 17 — (We Don't Need This) Fascist Groove Thang
The Human League — Life Kills
Japan — The Art of Parties
Modern Eon — Euthenics

naked girls on the cover and repeating names on one compilation were, to the best of my life-long knowledge, trademarks of PIRATE releases. Here is Ariola's product....
DOUBLE in the name reflects the band list, I suppose?? The more you live the less you know)))))

Still, the second volume is more traditional, by the way, but DOUBLE too nevertheless --

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Beatwaves of the '

Postby Passing_Stranger » Sat Nov 11, 2023 2:13 pm

Didn't mean to interrupt postings for so long but job and life got in the way. So I see "Double art Vol. 2" has been posted. Great string of posts by quadrascope, by the way! I'll still continue this tread, let's move on with another K-Tel product. It's the Dutch variation on "Modern dance" theme - "Beatwaves of the '80s", released in 1983. It has some baffling inclusions yet at the same time serves as a great cross-section of "progressive" pop music of the early 1980s (emphasis on pop, of course). Lots of very well-known, even overused songs here but nicely interspersed with the lesser-exposed ones which makes it a very nice listen overall. The timings are not given neither on the back sleeve not the labels so I used 7" versions.

Tracklist:

The Maisonettes — Heartache Avenue
Soft Cell — Tainted Love
Haircut One Hundred — Love Plus One
Modern Romance — Queen of the Rapping Scene
Heaven 17 — Let Me Go
Thompson Twins — In the Name of Love
Icehouse — Hey Little Girl
OMD — Maid of Orleans
The Human League — Don't You Want Me
Spandau Ballet — Chant No. 1
A Flock of Seagulls — I Ran
Split Enz — I Hope I Never
The Selecter — On My Radio
Toyah — Be Proud, Be Loud (Be Heard)
Simple Minds — Promised You a Miracle
Sniff 'n' the Tears — Driver's Seat
