Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Romance of Our Tim

Postby Passing_Stranger » Wed Nov 29, 2023 8:13 am

A new one here: Romance of Our Time, released in Hong Kong in 1983. It was also released under the same name but with modified track list in Taiwan, so I decided to add the songs from that as bonuses, bringing the listening time to about an hour (as I like to do). It is an interesting choice of songs (and their versions in some cases), and encompasses both famous names and relatively obscure ones. Got to know a new one myself - Sal Paradise, who?! Feels like the stream of artists from the decade is endless!

One major thing about this one is that I couldn't find the 7" version of Private Lives' song. I thought it'll be easy to cut it from the 12" version but for some reason the ending is different (and my cutting skills are rudimentary). I didn't want to miss out on the song so the compilation featured the edit of 12". If anyone's willing to help me out with the real 7" I'll gladly change the files, so please get in touch. Otherwise it all is present and correct.

Tracklist:

Culture Club — Time (Clock of the Heart)
The Human League — Mirror Man
Fun Boy Three — Our Lips Are Sealed
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Telegraph
Ultravox — We Came to Dance
Private Lives — Memory of Your Name
F.R. David — I Need You
Pale Fountains — Thank You
Spandau Ballet — Communication
Depeche Mode — Get the Balance Right
Fad Gadget — Life on the Line
Mick Karn — Sensitive
H2O — I Dream to Sleep
Eurythmics — Love is a Stranger
Sal Paradise — Sahara No Way

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Hot Shots '83

Postby Passing_Stranger » Sun Dec 17, 2023 12:56 pm

Here's a curious release - a West German compilation "Super 20 - 20 Hot Shots '83" that gathered both "New wave"/synth acts from the UK (and Australia) - and acts that epitomized MOR/mainstream/pop stuff of the era. I dispensed with the latter but found the "New wave" part (side A) interesting enough to recreate. Nothing revealing for an experienced listener but nice enough to give a listen once in a while :)

I'm especially glad to see some of my favourite artists and songs here. Ultravox are always a pleasure to see (and hear), and it's great the song they're represented with is not something worn-out by repeated inclusion (they could've chosen "Hymn", hooray to them for going with a much less successful - for some reason - "We came to dance"). And what a joy to see "Telegraph" featured! What an undeserved flop! It's one of my best-loved singles of the year and so good to see it on quite a few compilations - probably got to more homes this way than on 7" (or maybe even an LP!). "Telephone operator" is another often overlooked gem. On the other hand they could've found something else from Spandau - and dispensed with CuClub altogether. But that's only a minor gripe.

Tracklist:

Icehouse — Hey Little Girl
The Thompson Twins — We Are Detective
Ultravox — We Came to Dance
Fun Boy Three — The Farm Yard Connection
Spandau Ballet — True
Robert Palmer — You Are in My System
Heaven 17 — Temptation
Pete Shelley — Telephone Operator
Culture Club — Church of the Poison Mind
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Telegraph

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Í Blíðu og Stríðu

Postby Passing_Stranger » Mon Dec 25, 2023 11:41 am

Merry Christmas everyone! To mark this wonderful occasion here's the new recreation - as Icelandic compilation called "Í Blíðu og Stríðu". Have no idea what that means but the line-up is stellar, which prompted me to "do it". Great mix of artists and songs both well-known and not so much, I like the results very much.

Tracklist:

Mobiles — Amour Amour
A Flock of Seagulls — Messages
Heaven 17 — Penthouse & Pavement
The Human League - The Things That Dreams Are Made of
Depeche Mode — Just Can't Get Enough
Bara-Flokkurinn — Saints Keep Crying
Icehouse — We Can Get Together
Dramatis — No One Lives Forever
Ultravox — Vienna
Yazoo — Only You
Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark — Joan of Arc
John Foxx — Europe After the Rain
Sylvian · Sakamoto — Bamboo Houses
Simple Minds — Glittering Prize
Midge Ure — No Regrets
Japan — Ghosts

Hello Passing_Stranger, thanks a lot for this. I just checked my library, Rissan had the missing track in his Unknown Beauty Vol. 219. Cheers

Re: SHARE: recreated 1980s compilations - Modern Heroes

Postby Passing_Stranger » Sun Dec 31, 2023 11:12 am

Hi guys! To commemorate the passing of another year (not the very best one, admittedly, but what can we do), here's final recreation for 2023 - UK v/a "Modern heroes" from 1982. It's an interesting one, with lots of obscure selections and an imaginative tracklist. A bit this'n'that, but maybe that was the point, and it's a very good cross-section showcasing the diversity (real one) of the then-current UK music scene. Again a new discovery for me - Strange Arrangement? Who?! By the way that's the one I couldn't find even in mp3 320 kbps. The song's not really anything to write home about (your judgement may vary), so no big loss. Still, if anyone has it in FLAC/APE/etc - don't hesitate to get in touch!

With this said, Happy New Year everyone and all the best to you for 2024! :D

Tracklist:

Duran Duran — Hungry Like the Wolf
Yazoo — Don't Go
Japan — Cantonese Boy
Fashion — Love Shadow
The Cure — The Hanging Garden
Talk Talk — Today
Modern English — I Melt with You
China Crisis — African & White
Strange Arrangement — Don't Run Away from Here
Bow Wow Wow — I Want Candy
The Human League — Hard Times
Sylvian / Sakamoto — Bamboo Houses
Depeche Mode — Leave in Silence
Simple Minds — Promised You a Miracle
Thomas Dolby — Windpower
A Flock of Seagulls — Space Age Love Song
Nancy Nova — Made in Japan
Bauhaus — Spirit
Mick Karn — Sensitive
Pigbag — Big Bean
