I apologize to anyone who uploaded the Morrissey Live at Earls Court (2005) from me recently. I wasn't aware it was a crappy 64k version. I've since upgraded it to a higher VBR version! So feel free to download away when the hub comes back to life.

Dirty records..again, probably guilty on that one. However, I do label all my vinyl rips as such and some are better than others. I welcome any decent suggestions to clean my old vinyl. Apparantly the discwasher fluid and brush doesn't cut it. Anybody have any decent sound editing software I could use to clean up my existing tracks? I'd hate to have to re-rip them.

I hope i'm not the only culprit out there!!

I wish I knew of a de-crackler sw for vinyl rips. Maybe CoolEdit Pro?

I do a theral "magic roller" rub on all vinyl before any ripping. Sometimes that doesn't stop all pops. I knew I once had to trash a song rip when there was a really LOUD single crackle I couldn't get rid of.

Then there was the entire side of a record I had to trash since the recorder also recorded all wave output(bells and whistles from various applications). From then on, I've muted wave outs.

As for label ripping, the minimum for me is just in the filename: Artist - song. I can fill in the rest. Sadly, i still download a lot of tracks that have no id3v2(whatever it's called) info, and just 01 - Crappy Song.mp3. Somewhere i have a list of unknown files on my hard drive since I have no idea who sings them.

Any files I download from soulseek or DC++ I re-align the filename(artist - song), and fill in what I know for idv2 tags. Then it can go on the shoutcast server, and backups.

So when will the dc++ hub to be up again?? It been down for the last week.

I've been hanging out at - theukhub.no-ip.com - at the suggestion of nuwavefan. It's not the best place but it has some good users. I'll be there until our HUB returns.

I know I'm a big offender of crackly vinyl rips. Unfortunatly I don't have a means to clean them up beyond the typical by hand methods. When I find a cleaner copy on the hub - I replace it.

I don't have access to clean copies without spending money, and I really want to get my things digitalized. Some stuff is just plain unavailable.

It's embarrassing, but I'm working on it!

I just got my new WD ext 250gig HD from newegg.com. I am in the process of moving all of my media files around. Once I am done getting everything in order. I will be back on the DC++ uk hub or the wave hub if it ever comes back on line again. and on soulseek network. The good news is I will have an editional 250gig HD space for new wave music after i am thru. yeah!!!![:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D][:D]

I think you're going to find that most all sound editing (restoration) software will only work well with reasonably clean vinyl. I use both Diamond Cut's DC6 package ($200.00 U.S. approx.) as well as Waves restoration bundle ($1,000 to $1,200 U.S.) and I can tell you nothing will work on dirty vinyl. While clicks and crackle can be effectively removed or greatly reduced even on somewhat dirty records, the surface and groove noise in most cases cannot.

The reason for this is that the most restoration packages will lower the noise floor by 10 to 20 dB at best; beyond that you begin to lose audio information causing loss of high end (muffled sound) and the introduction of digital artifacts. (chirping or high pitched sounds) The noise floor in dirty records is too high to achieve good results with anything short of a Cedar Restoration station (many 10's of thousands of dollars) Have a read.

Surface/groove noise is a product of the number of times a piece of vinyl has been played, the amount of dirt/contaminants ground into the vinyl by the stylus as the record is played and the original pressing of the vinyl. If your vinyl is meticulously cleaned when new, you'll prolong it's useful play life by many plays.

Some other points to remember: 45's typically don't restore as well as 12" or lps. The reason for this is that in many cases the vinyl and presses used in the manufacture of 45's was less than that of 12"/lp's. Also, a high quality of turntable and pre amp is necessary for truly good results.

Seriously though, I've been eyeing up the Restoration bundle by quite awhile. Do you find it's head and shoulders above other cheaper packages or the gain very incremental. I'm thinking about SoundSoap Pro, A) as a 90% solution and B) as a way not to get a divorce.

I can't speak about Soundsoap having never used it, but the difference between DC6 and Waves is about 20% better in terms of click/crackle in favor of Waves. Not that it won't achieve the same final result with DC6, you'll just work longer to get there. They are about equal in terms of CNF (Continuous Noise Filter) operation. All in all, DC6 is still your best bang for the buck. I've also tried Dartpro and a few others but found the 2 I use to be excellent.

Yes, I drool over the Cedar System, but in reality, the rack system is overkill for my needs. I'd be happy with their SADIE software based version for about 20K U.S. (I think) I'm only about 19.5 K short of getting one!

Actually, I just had a peek at Bias's site and it looks like Soundsoap works much like Waves, including the visual aspects of the program. In the end though Blir, the software is only as good as the users ear and the condition of the vinyl you're restoring.

If you want to part with a bit of info, the folks at Waves give you a 14 day trial of the restoration bundle. It will give you an idea of what can be accomplished and whether you feel it's worth your time and effort.
