MP3 sharing - a simple request

Discuss hard-to-find or out-of-print New Wave and '80s Alternative, and share a few songs along the way.
NOTE: requesting songs that are entirely unrelated to the genres discussed here or easily found on CD is strongly discouraged and posts will be enforced as needed.

MP3 sharing - a simple request

Postby MikeP » Wed Dec 07, 2005 3:20 am

While I'm all for sharing rarities and hard-to-find songs, it does seem like the file sharing is getting a little out of hand, particularly when people are sharing entire albums that are easily available on CD. My preference is to share a few songs if you like, but try to keep from posting entire albums as this is really not what this area was intended for. Before Yousendit.com exploded onto the scene and made instant sharing irresistable, this was really a place to arrange trades via email, CD-R, etc. Just trying to keep this place from becoming a screaming target for the RIAA greedheads.

If you want to engage in "extreme sharing", seriously consider joining the <a href="http://www.geocities.com/natephish/hub.html">hub</a>![;)]

I kinda figured this would happen sooner or later. The last few weeks it's gotten kinda crazy with sooooo much stuff being posted here. Mike's right: alot of it is fairly common stuff too.

Notice that in the last day or so since MikeP first posted this thread, how sharing has just about come to a screeching halt here. Although it was fun, it was getting a little out of hand. None of us want this site to end up like Torchomatic.

Since I am new.. Please let me know If I request a song that seems out of line. I try to research the songs I request to see if they were available on cd or easily to get. In my quest to compile this 5,000 song list from 1980-89 of the Billboard top 100 weekly chart I have come across alot of songs that are not easy to find. For example: Last night I ran across Vels, Sade Cafe, Graces, Korona, Ect... I have of late boughten a few Spider 45s becuase I couldnt find the songs on cd. Anyway I just wanted everyone to know what I am doing so it doesnt seem strange for me to request mp3s[:D]
Its nice to be able to hear at least one song by the group:). I have already added 10 new cds to my collection becuase of this project[:D]

Hardrock80srule,first off, welcome to NWO![8D]
Despite the expressed concerns, you are well within your right to make said requests.

However, it is incumbent on ALL OF US to be prudent in choosing our requests and make sure the quantity of requests are 'reasonable' and don't constitute a 'laundry list' of songs better suited for a locale such as the NW Hub.

I'll be the first to admit getting carried away at the height of the yousendit 'posting frenzy' (both on the giving and receiving end of things).[:I]

Now that it all seems to have subsided somewhat, might I suggest we revert to an 'email first' correspondence approach and let it resume in that vein. (just my 2 cents) [;)]

I had the greatest urge to post a “yousendit” of the theme from How the Grinch Stole Christmas![:o)]

Kidding aside, point well taken, Mike. I only discovered NWO this year and it has been a life changing experience for me. From Buzzcocks to X-Ray Spex, from Blancmange to Yazoo, all these years I’ve honestly felt like I was the only one in the world who loved this music until I stumbled upon this site! I would hate to jeopardize the continued existence of NWO.

I have only been able to get one Spider MP3(everything is alright). That's a good band, IMO. And i do believe a greatest hits cd was made available, but most likely LONG out of print.

And on that same genre, 707 had a CD released of long out-of-print material. Like a meeegafoorce.

As I mentioned in the other thread, I am also guilty of uploading full albums but I really did start feeling a little apprehensive when the rest started doing it too, yay! So, I absolutely agree with Blir, 2Nu & Mike.

Whole albums would be better shared through the hub or soulseek. It would be good enough if we can just upload a couple of outstanding tracks here for sampling purposes.

Oh, and to those who are looking for songs, please make it easier for us by mentioning your e-mail adrs in your post. (Somebody suggested this before). I think for now I'll go back to sending songs via eml![:D]

The songs I have posted here have either been ripped from vinyl or out-of-print CD's or hard-to-find imports, or "out-of-print hard-to-find imports" (whew!). I have made a conscious effort to avoid songs that are easily available on CD. I don't believe MikeP's comment was aimed at contributors like myself for the reason I mentioned, but I understand his concern. I would hope the songs I have offered so far are, for the most part, acceptable, and I would also hope that at least one in five are even liked!
