Not necessarily New wave, but I'd LOVE to find a copy of her earliest single (as a solo act) called "I Wanna Be Where the Boys Are" . Stephen Rabow played it on KYYX & KHIT and I have an old scratchy cassette copy that I can barely hear anymore. Has anyone heard of this, and would be willing to share ? Thanks in advance![:)]

hmmm

In 1984, Jody issued a single of "Girls Night Out" b/w "My House" (which was later covered by Paul Lekakis in a fit of rainbow signings at Sire - Michael Davidson, etc) I used to have it vinyl years ago, let me see if I can track down a copy of it.

in 1984, Book of Love released "Boy", which contained the immortal "I wanna be where the boys are line" I think you're speaking of......

otherwise, the official US single was "Looking For A New Love" in early 1987.

KYYX -

I have heard of this song--though I've never heard it. I was also aware that she did a song with the Art of Noise, and I can't find that anywhere, either.

I'm guessing your best bet is to try GEMM or eBay, and rip the vinyl yourself.

Just for kicks, here are some sites that detail the songs for which you're looking:

Good luck! Keep me posted if you find anything!

from the 1st link:
Where The Boys Are 12" Single
Year: 1984
Catalogue Number: 880349 (Dutch 12" Phonogram)/884061 (International)
Playlist:
A Where The Boys Are [The Long Way Home Mix!] (6.10)
B1 Where The Boys Are [7" Version] (3.13)
B2 My House [4-Free] (4.53)
Where The Boys Are produced by Bruce Woolley and Gary Langan, My House (4-Free) by Bruce Woolley.
All tracks written by Jody Watley and Bruce Woolley.

yes! That is exactly what I'm looking for. OK, I'll keep trying. I was having no luck even just looking for information if this even existed, so your links MAS were swell. I'm not into her solo stuff, but there was something special about that very 1st single. I've tried slsk and the old winmx and the old kazaa forever w/ no luck. Thanks guys.[:X]

I have an old Jody Watley vinyl comp somewhere - it featured her stuff with Shalamar and some early solo things. I will dig it out & see if it's on there. Give me a couple of days.

Hey Wolvie,
thanks for looking; I appreciate it[:X]
I'm still loving your CD mix, BTW, esp. the Divine track and the reacquaintencing of "Blind Vision". Yum!

ah. my bad - there apparently WERE two singles - "Girls Night Out" wan't anything to get excited by, in case you were wondering....

if nothing else, this finally answers how she ended up being hip enough for Band Aid.....

I think New Wavers in America always considered the artists on (the original) Band Aid "hip," but in fact, in the UK they were merely chart-topping pop stars! Same with the subsequent Band Aids.

Thanks! I love that Divine track too! I'll get those Monsoon songs off sometime soon.

I remember watching the original Band Aid thinking it was Sade, then I realized it was Jody Watley. I wondered why the girl from Shalamar was singing on it. Who knew she would become so huge a couple years later.
