Mining for Pet Shop Boys
Posted: Fri Sep 28, 2007 4:45 amBeen going through my archives and rediscovering some buried treasure. Here are some excerpts from Pet Shop Boys VHS releases I bought back in the day that were never subsequently released on DVD.
The first is from [i]projections[/i], a series of short films directed by Derek Jarman which were used as a backdrop for the live shows on their first world tour. In and of themselves, these films may be a bit tedious to watch but for the hardcore PSB enthusiast, they offer a unique glimpse into the mindset of the band that the actual music video didn't explore. This is the Jarman interpretation of Being Boring which I think actually compliments the Bruce Weber film very nicely.

This second clip is from [i]television[/i], basically a group of Pet Shop Boys televised appearances, each sandwiched between a different music video. Stylistically, the clips have a low resolution tv sort of appearance and sound, as if the camera was set up in front of an actual tv set playing these clips. As they transition into the actual video, the quality jumps back to normal. I always get a kick out of this appearance on Soul Train:

And finally, this is from [i]highlights[/i], literally highlights from their Wembley Stadium performance in 1989. I'm always surprised that this was never issued on DVD because I can see it being of interest to even the casual PSB fan. Maybe they intend to publish the show in it's entirety one day as oppposed to this half hour condensed version. Even here, you can see some signature elements of a PSB show like hip-hop, dance, costume and theatrics.
