Secrets of YouTube

from a mailing list I subscribe to:

"I found about this recently too. Regarding video quality the
difference can vary greatly - it depends how the uploader uploaded
the video. If he/she uploaded it as 320x240 there will be little/no
improvement in the video (all old-standard videos on YouTube are
320x240). Also, anything uploaded before June last year (introduction
date was possibly 2007/06/24) will not have a high quality version
available. HQ videos generally seem to be 472x360 or around there -
still not good enough for fullscreen IMO but a damn sight better than
before.

The main benefit you'll experience is the sound. Normal YouTube
videos only have 64kbps mono MP3 audio (some even only 22kHz!), but
HQ videos have 128kbps 44.1kHz AAC-LC. Great for music :)

Wow! Tried this and the picture improved quite a lot. I then dl the title to see how much of the improvement remains when you create an mp4 file and it's still better than the crap you see without this method. I was already getting enthusiastic and made a dv-clip of it to see if a few filters in my video editing software could do the trick to get a picture good enough to enjoy on TV, but this still seems to be ahead of its time...
Anyway, great to know if you want to enjoy these full size on your computer - doesn't work with all clips, though.

I've been applying this trick now for several vids. I'm furiously trying to grab as many favorites as possible before they close the loophole. It rocks! Plus it lets you grab the .mp4 rather than the .flv so you don't have to convert. Big thanks for the tip Schwenko.
