Paul Rymer's explanation:

"John Punter and some of the crew joined Japan onstage for the final
couple of songs at Nagoya. I think there was also a lion and something
else. It was to surprise the band. Not sure who was left on mixing
duties!"

Yeah it doesn't really seem to jibe with Japan's "image." Heck it doesn't even jibe with their early image. Makes more sense that it was a "surprise."
