I think this was very late 80's (maybe early 90's?) -- not so much new wave (otherwise I'm sure I'd have it in my collection).

The artist is African-American, I think she was a former member of a successful band. I can see the video in my mind's eye -- it features her singing, standing with a (bass) guitar?

Anyway, it's a guitar chord-driven song. I wish I could remember *any* lyrics. It's some sort of "relationship" song. All I remember is the style of song reminds me of the Barenaked Ladies' "It's all been done".

For some reason I want to say Grace Jones. She was in Conan the Destroyer and View to a Kill, but she also recorded some songs (mostly for films). I believe she did play bass as well as sing.

Of course, I just saw her in Conan the other day and that

Joan Armetrading? Tracy Chapman? Joan had a few videos that sounds like the one your talking about.

Joan Armatrading is a good guess. The songs I can remember are both up tempo pop- "Drop the Pilot" and "Call Me Names (I Love it When You).

Nope, but thanks for the guesses so far. One of these days it'll come to me... I hope (lest I fear a trip to the sanitorium). I've remembered two words: "and you...". Hopefully more lyrics will come to me.

I think the sing you are thinking of is called "I Know"
Dionne Farris who was in Arrested Development.

Good call ... sounds like you might be right. I almost forgot about this mid-90's gem. Certainly reminds me a lot of Joan Armatrading.

I'm happy that I could think of it. I actually bought the cd when it came out. The 80's Wlir/Wdre, EuroDisco(Italo Dance) and Kroq is where I live, but that Dionne Farris song stood out amongst the Mid-90's crap. I had Parachute pants as well I think they
