English version here -- When Sara called me to ask about the youtube clip and why I posted it, I just said I was hoping it would help, and of course it was the help of many people around the world and here at NW Outpost... René, Paul Miceli, tha_farfetch, gazebo, Panorama - i.e. Dan Coogan, SuperZoomBattle2086 and the Reddit.com army, and Sara Kinberg at Swedish Radio PP3... ultimately that led to Stefan Petersson identifying the mystery song.

I asked Sara if she could transcribe the interview, and she said she would post it in english as well.

Anyway, really amazing odessy we have been on with this search, I'm so happy to have the mystery solved and that so many people were interested enough to care about the song, it really became an obsession with some people… we really didn't know if it would ever be identified. I hope Johan will get some much deserved attention and some payments from a lot of people that will be happy to purchase the song… it truly was a worldwide group effort by a lot of people that love the song and needed the mystery solved, so many thanks to everyone that helped in the search.

I listened to the interview, it was fantastic to hear from Johan, he truly seemed touched that so many people were searching so long.

Thanks again to everyone.

4/2/04 - 9/17/13 the search on NW Outpost (9 years and 5 months)
2/28/03 on http://spiritofradio.ca (10 years and 7 months)
and 27 years for René.

English translation from the Swedish text using Google Translate:
He gives out records throughout the 1980s. He works with Swedish lyrics with themes of existentialism, relations and foreign cultures.
In a completely different continent, specifically America, created many years later a movement. A fragment of a song, taped from German radio in the 80s are 2002 out online with the question: "What is this?" Then follows years of speculation, but no one can find the solution.
But a late summer day in 2013 reaches låtmysteriet the huge internet community Reddit and then the radio program PP3 in Sweden. Some listeners react. They recognize the song and know who did it.
And now he's HERE, the solution to the mysterious låtgåtan. Welcome, Johan Lindell!

Interview with Johan Lindell follows....
Members of the band Roxette played on the song.
Really enjoyed the interviews !

Let's give it up for PP3 Radio in Sweden ! most stations here in North America wouldn't have given this the time of day.

Mind = blown that the song so many of us were obsessed with finding all these years has 3 guys from Roxette playing on it. The one time InvisibleMan could have possibly contributed something worthwhile and he blew it.

Agreed, the song is better than some are giving it credit for. When I think of the pop songs of the 80's, by people such as Rick Astley, Paul Young, Rick Springfield, and many others, I don't find our roof song to be any worse than a lot of the other material that got airplay.

Do we guess that Mr. Lindell's record label back then didn't have a lot of marketing clout? The song deserved a better fate. Just my .02 cents.

Nice but I find Lindell rather odd. He used all those synths yet does not know how to use a computer or send an email. He knows nothing about itunes and puts all his songs online for free? His spoken English is also awful for someone who did a whole album in that language. I still love the song though. It deserved to be a hit. The other songs are also very good, especially the early 80's stuff. It has a touch of Sakamoto and Sylvian to it.

Hi everyone! I'm Sara from the radio show PP3 that solved the mystery thanks to our listeners & Reddit. Johan is happy & overwhelmed by the interest for his song. Since he, according to himself, "never really been out on the internet" he asked me to tell you guys this:

"Thank you very much for your interest in#65279; my music. The remastered version of the 1985 album "Ghost Rider" including the song "On the Roof" will be available on iTunes and Spotify on October 5th, 2013. Yours truly, Johan Lindell".

I knew it wasn't going to be called Stay The Second Time Around. All those fruitless searches lol.

Glad it's finally been solved and we get to hear the full version finally. I hope the version that gets released on iTunes is better than the one that's on Youtube.

The song is probably not the great tune we were expecting it to end up being but it's still a good one. I'm happy it got solved before I kick the bucket.[:D]

Google "on the roof" and you get 327,000,000 results... finding the link to the mystery song without knowing the artist name was near impossible (obviously).

I posted on the youtube clip page:
"If Johan had posted the lyrics on his site we would have found the song long before (though the mystery was fun too), so if you are a musician, post your lyrics on your website please."

To which H8tec replied:
"What makes his site interesting is that almost every album on it has lyrics listed if you click on the song name, but not that one! Kinda funny if you think about it."
Frankly I think Stay (The Second Time Around) is a better name for the song, it's the main part of the chorus, though the song is about being on the roof.

Also, listening to the song and comparing the lyrics (finally discovered...) this line:
"People running down the row" I think is actually "People running down below" because he is looking down on them from the roof.

Another lyric correction - 2nd verse:
"Woman you're on your own" I think is actually "Woman I done you wrong"
Full Lyrics

Up on the roof I go
Sit and drink my wine
People running down the row
I wanna feel the cool winds blow

Woman you're on your own
I knew this had to come
Now your walking out my door
Calling a cab on the way you go
Full Lyrics (corrected)

Up on the roof I go
Sit and drink my wine
People running down below
I wanna feel the cool winds blow
Killing time up here
Just me and the empty sky
Trying to sort things out
About what happened the other night

Woman I done you wrong
I knew this had to come
Now your walking out my door
Calling a cab on the way you go

Sitting on a rooftop
Talking to a blue sky
Drinking on a rooftop
Listen to my heart go, don't go, don't go
Listen to my mind go

Stay, the second time around
Won't you please Stay, the second time around
Darling won't you please Stay, the second time around
Ah please Stay, the second time around

Watching the girls go by
Like a string of pearls in the crowd
Hey you with the long black hair
I've got some wine to share

Sitting on a rooftop
Talking to a blue sky
Drinking on a rooftop
Listen to my heart go, don't go, don't go
Listen to my mind go

Stay, the second time around
Won't you please Stay, the second time around
Darling won't you please Stay, the second time around
Ah won't you Stay, the second time around

Thanks Mike, glad the song has finally been identified. It was a group effort by many people, just happy to have been a part of the search, grateful that the youtube post ultimately helped in the long run.

Don't know how long some of the relevant sound clips may be posted where they currently are, so I memorialized the 90-second clip, the 4-minute Engish interview with Johan Lindell, and the full song in the first ten minutes of this week's "Crap From The Past".

It will live here in perpetuity:

There's a lot of crap on the radio, but there's only one Crap From The Past.
