I asked Sal Solo. He said he's never heard of it. Anyone follow up on whether it's the Lost Patrol? Or was it decided that they were punk?

I think they were ruled out because it sounds nothing like them...never heard them myself so I couldnt tell you. I havent heard any responses to The Immaculate Fools. Someone on another message board was sure it had to be them due to the singer's voice but I cant seem to even get a sample of them to compare voices myself. Im thinking they are too popular of a band for it to be them but I'd still like to definitely rule them out.

Crimsor, check your inbox, I just sent you an Immaculate Fools track I got off Limewire...the vocal sound is pretty much the same and the patterns are close, but I don't know...the 'Stay' track's singer just sounds deeper and a bit throatier...what do you think?

Thanks for that. The music and overall style definitely sounds like the same band but I just dont think the voices match. As you said, the "Stay" guy's voice is a lot higher where this guy's sounds almost identical to Richard Butler. I guess we can probably rule them out but not completely. This may require a chart [:D]

Talk about surprised. For about a year now I was under the impression that Sal Solo had died, for some reason. Now I have to figure out where the hell I heard that or who I confused him with. I could swear I read it on a Classix Nouveaux fansite. Weird!

That Modern Vision thing seemed to be it. Someone claimed it sounded like that band, then we see they had a song called Stay around that time. I know blackrhythm.com claimed it wasnt it, but I wonder about that. The weirder thing is the week that record was found on three different websites, they were all sold. Yet noone here claimed to buy it and listen to it. Thats the weirdest thing of all. Now I cant find it anywhere!

Sal Solo has a website. He is indeed playing Christian music these days. I just emailed him this afternoon and sent him a sample of the song. He said, "never heard it before."

As far as the Immaculate Fools. This is from allmusic and the description seems really different than the Stay track.

"The British band the Immaculate Fools became so popular in Spain that they eventually moved there. Formed in London, England, in 1984, the Immaculate Fools was comprised of Kevin Weatherill (lead vocals, acoustic guitar, harmonica, bass), Paul Weatherill (acoustic bass, backing vocals, percussion), Brian Betts (acoustic guitar, slide guitar, percussion, mandolin), and Barry Wickens (violin, dulcimer, acoustic guitar, accordion). Although the group landed on the charts in Britain, their hybrid of Celtic music, folk, and alternative rock found even more success in Spain and Germany. In 1987, their LP Dumb Poet was released in America by A&M Records and the Psychedelic Furs-esque track "Tragic Comedy" was a minor hit on college radio. The band toured with Bob Dylan, Iggy Pop, Simple Minds, the Stranglers, and the Rolling Stones; however, they grew tired of the English music scene in the late '80s and relocated to Spain, where they were superstars. In 1997, the Immaculate Fools broke up after Weatherill departed from the group. I really like the Modern Vision connection. Their other albums and tracks that I've seen for sale are titled things like Dance of Folly (1987) and I don't Recognize Myself (1986). Those just seem like titles the band behind Stay (listen to the goofy lyrics) would enjoy.

Buying on a hunch is always risky Motors, even if it is only a few bucks...I have a basement full of risks that I shouldn't have taken. It really gives you a perspective on the number of groups and amount of music that is out there.

Based on everything I've read about this song, I'd say that Modern Vision is an excellent candidate for the mystery group. Most of Rene's posts were from German and European stations and being from Belgium puts them in the right place, and 86-87 is also the right time.

It would be nice to see this one put to rest.

I did some serious detective work and managed to track down contact information for the band, Modern Vision. They are Belgian, recorded an album and a few singles between 1985-1987. They played at festivals in Europe and had some airplay. They broke up in 1987 and formed another band and then yet another. I contacted a band member named Chris and he tells me that indeed, Stay (Second Time Around) --not the actual title, it's just "Stay" -- was the 7" that has appeared at places like Gemm.

So, Modern Vision is out. I sent the MP3 to the band member and he said that it wasn't the song. Sorry, folks. I jumped the gun on that one.

The good news is, no one needs to rush out a buy that Stay 7".

I wonder however, if it's at all possible that there is another band called Modern Vision? (That's probably a given.) But from Belgium? (Two of the same.) I'll ask the band member some more questions about it.
