I've been searching for this song for years...

I made a rough sketch of the sound and melody, based on an almost 30 years old memory of the song, and put it in my dropbox. Here's a link to it

- I think the song is from around 1985, because it was on one of my sister’s mixtapes, along with Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill. The tape is lost, and my sister had no idea what song it was.
- The song has lyrics. The melody in the second half of the mp3 is sung by a woman.
- The song has a somewhat eerie and quite atmospheric sound to it.
- I don’t remember any of the lyrics.

Do you remember if the whole song was sung by a female or was there also other singers?

Thompson Twins - Sister of Mercy?

Also could be 80s Mike Oldfield...check out the stuff he did with Maggie Reilly.

cispas: Cocteau Twins is so close. I have listened to every track I could find so far, and the style and sound reminds me so much of the song I'm looking for, and I kept thinking that the next track surely had to be it, but I haven't yet been able to find a Cocteau Twins track that has the melody I remember. Are there any other artists with VERY similar sound and style? Or could it still be Cocteau Twins, only I haven't found the correct track yet?

Cocteau Twins' melodies/singing is often quite free floating and all over the place, while the song I'm looking for probably had a somewhat tidier and more traditional melody line, but with quite a lot of reverb, like Cocteau Twins.

humanracer: It's not Thompson Twins. I think there was only a female singer, possibly two, like in Cocteau Twins.

There's only one singer, Elizabeth Fraser, in Cocteau Twins. It sounds like two women because Liz's vocal tracks were layered over each other.
