Update: Solved after 13 years. It's Suns of One - Calling from, believe it or not, 1987.

One of the comments on that board suggested it sounded like Marc Almond with Jimmy Sommerville on backing vocals. :) I do enjoy the song - would love to see it solved!!

It sounds like the group Fake, who released a song called Brick.

It's like the Second Time Around thing, the song title is probably not in the lyrics.

His voice slightly reminds me of the lead singer from Elegant Machinery.
