I burned this song off the alternative channel from digital cable and wasn't paying attention:{ It's a torchsong and it goes:

using google you could have easily found it's "alive and living now" from the collaborations album

When you used Google did you put in the lyrics or REM? I found a REM lyrics site a few weeks ago and looked at EVERY song on every cd and found no matching lyrics. Of course "collaborations" wasn't one of the CD's:O

I searched in google on something like:
REM lyrics "barely breathing"
5th hit I got is:

The song is from a Golden Palominos album: "Drunk with Passion".

The Palominos are a band with no set membership. The cast changes as different people sit in for awhile.

Forgot:

Drunk with Passion was released in 1991.

And its an awesome some.
