Chameleons - What Does Anything Mean? Basically

Postby Spindlebrook » Mon Dec 07, 2009 11:45 am

I've completed listening to both discs. One thing that stuck with me is how the drum intro to "Looking Inwardly" sounds compared to the old version. Previously it sounded murky, watery and somewhat flat. Now, the drums absolutely crackle and the song is overall clear and bright.

The contrast in production between "In Shreds" and "Nostalgia" vs. the rest of the album is noticeable, but understandable seeing as how those tracks came from an earlier session. They sound a lot more raw than the album tracks.

The demos disc sounds fantastic, considering the tracks are sourced from a cassette coming from Dave Fielding's private collection. There are a couple of glitches here and there, but the demos are very listenable. Aside from a few lyric changes, the demos closely resemble their album counterparts.

What's next from The Chameleons and Blue Apple? How about a rarities compilation? Just a thought...

Sorry for the double post. I can't wait to get my copy! But, WHY are "In Shreds" and "Nostalgia" on this? True, they were tacked onto the original cd, but not the album. They don't fit. I think a good solid collection of Statik-era b-sides is in order, along with the Tony Fletcher e.p. - one of the best things i've ever heard from them!

I don't mind hearing "In Shreds" on anything! But I do see your point.

I would love to have a remastered The Fan and the Bellows type compilation, with stuff like "Sally" added on. The original "Bellows" disc is out of print and going for big money on Amazon.

And I do agree with you about the Tony Fletcher EP. Four songs, and three of them are amazing.

Out of curiosity, which one out of the four on TFWOW don't you like?
Of course In Shreds is welcome on ANYTHING! Especially *that* version. So, in terms of a new fan that doesn't have Fan and the Bellows, this should be bought! Hopefully "Fan" will get reissued. Then, you have all of the 'Imaginary' cd's. I don't think the band could be bothered (or able to sit in the same room without killing each other) about a good set like that. Why not a box set?

I ordered, can't wait to hear it. Over the years I've tried to collect them all... BTW, "Denims and Curls" is one of all time my favorite Chameleons songs, it would be nice to get all of those rarities, BBC sessions, Radio 1, etc together in a set. I know they have other stuff sitting around, I bet it is just a matter of time.

"Free For All" is merely pretty good and to me gets overshadowed by the other three songs. Then again, almost anything else would too.

I'm amazed at how many post-breakup releases they've had based on only three real albums (I'm only counting the first incarnation of the group). Especially live CD's, it's like they're Phish or something. The only essential Chameleons live CD to me is Live in Toronto, which has a nice mix of material from all three albums, and "Splitting in Two", of course.

I think the Imaginary issues were a way for the band to finally earn a bit of $$, which they never did when they were together. I happily bought all of them, but they could have been condensed into a double set. "Live at the Academy" is by far the best live album imo.
