A little off topic, per se, but anyone have recommendations on some headphones for listening to 'this type of music?' I love the 80's new wave and want a headphone that maximize the sound. I have some VModa Crossfade M-100 but they are a little heavy in a couple of ways. Looking at the BeoPlay H6, but not going any higher on price. Thanks in advance for any recommendations!

I cannot suggest any specific ones but in my experience there has always been some kind of trade off between price and build. If you want good sounding earphones at least expect to pay £200 (or $300 I guess) at least. You can get great earphones for say £40 but expect them to break within a year.

I'm still using my fantastic Pioneer SE-205 headphones that my parents gave me for a birthday in the late seventies !
Amazing, isn't it ?...

Depends on the amp driving the cans. Some cans require much more than others. Just as important is the DAC. Next the UI. Finally the mastering quality'format of the music. Depending on any of these features, buy accordingly to match. No sense in buying audiophile quality gear to playback MP3's from an Apple Ipod, 80's or current.

My Sony MDR-V150s are OK for budget listening but the 'skin' of the foam pads is deteriorating, leaving nice big ugly black flakes about the ears after every use. Brother-in-law got me a pair of A-T ATH-M50s last Christmas, which were pretty nice until they stopped working entirely after about five uses.

http://www.amazon.com/Sennheiser-HD-280 ... iser+hd280

I've had these for over 6 years now. They've pretty much fallen apart (cushion on headband is gone, and the soft ear pads are falling apart), but they still sound wonderful. I think that the excellent sound quality is due partly because they fit snugly around the ears. I've used them pretty much on a daily basis over the past 6 years. I actually ordered new Sennheiser headphones a few months ago and upgraded to a slightly more expensive kind. However, I was slightly disappointed in the sound, but I think that is partly due to me being used to the sound of the previous set. I should have just gone ahead and ordered the same ones again, but I figured that I would be upgrading. The sound on the Sennheiser HD 280 Pro is stunning, in my opinion. Sometimes certain frequencies are lost on headphones, resulting in a hollow sound, but these maintain a natural, stereo sound very well. But, everyone has differences in opinions when it comes to sound, so this is nothing more than a recommendation on what I like.

From one of the general shopping forums I go to, they seem to go ga-ga over Beyerdynamic. I have a pair of DT-990s, and have to admit that they sound pretty good (sent from a friend in Germany, years before the ga-ga in the forums). There's also DT-880, which has a flatter response. DT-990 is brighter and bassier.
Both models are available in a few choices of ohm ratings.

Despite the cost, I have been using these headphones for a decade and will use no other. They have crystal clarity and booming bass. I do all of my remastering through these headphones and swear by them:

Glad to hear you enjoy your new headphones, Sean. I have had a pair of Koss Portapro for mobile use for many years. Great sound/comfort for at the gym, but hardly a long term non fatiguing set of cans for home use. Whereas my Audeze LCD-X's, have fantastic reference sound I can listen to for hours on end with no fatigue, using a good DAC/AMP/source/transport of course. But at a much greater cost. For the cost and convenience, can't beat the Koss line of headphones, but are hardly reference capable in my humble opinion.

I'm glad you enjoy them. Just be careful with them. Since they are a low cost item they cannot handle being battered too much. I do wish the design was stronger but even higher end KOSS items don't sound as good. I used to buy these at Radio Shack under a different moniker, though they were/are the exact same thing. I've been through many sets over the years an even keep and extra unopened set in the closet. I have 2 sets in permanent use; one in my PC and one for the iPod.
