Ah Wikipedia, a source of information that anyone can edit so it must be reliable and trustworthy source of information, right?

As for the list, full of artists that we've all heard many, many times and not representative of a genre.

Ah yes...the list...note the lack of many post-punk/college rock/indie bands on this list...

Joy Division, Killing Joke, Sad Lovers and Giants, Section 25, Durutti Column, A Certain Ratio, REM, The Smiths, Kraftwerk...not here...

This is such a random list with many omissions...but definitive it is not...

God save the Wiki users and their approval! The problem is who is, but not who isn't on the list!

Siouxsie, Gang of Four, Pere Ubu, Talking Heads, Xmal Deutschland, Cabaret Voltaire, Cure DAF, Eyeless in Gaza, The Jam, Pylon, Teardrop Explodes, Wire, Tuxedomoon, The Comsat Angels, Flying Lizards, The Sound, The Specials, The Stranglers, Pete "Buzzcock" Shelley, Eddie and the Hot Rods...

No way that they are New Wave...

Neither Ministry, Sparks, Be Bop Deluxe...need more?

Almost completely wrong...chronology, methodology, genre...

are you serious???????? talking heads and teardrops explodes are the pefect examples of new wave. remember new wave is best identified as a period in music history not a musical style.

why not read this history from this very site:
http://www.nwoutpost.com/history.asp

Movements and styles such as Synthpop (Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Human League, Soft Cell) and New Romantic (Ultravox, Visage, Classix Nouveaux, Spoons, Peter Godwin, early Talk Talk) were, to many, the defining styles of new wave. Gary Numan's "Cars," Soft Cell's stark electronic take on "Tainted Love," and The Human League's "Don't You Want Me" helped push this new futuristic synthesizer-driven sound into the US mainstream. New romanticism, on the other hand, never managed much of an impression in the US—it remained very much a European (and Canadian) movement. Despite the general inadequacy of pigeonholing, there were the other requisite, defining styles from the era: Goth (Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Cure, Specimen, Bauhaus), Postpunk (The Chills, Gang of Four, The Sound, Joy Division, Comsat Angels), Ska (Madness, The Specials, The English Beat, The Untouchables, Bad Manners), Rockabilly (Dave Edmunds, Stray Cats, Polecats, The Cramps), and Power Pop (The Vapors, The Producers, 20/20, The Records). And still that's only scratching the surface. Even Top 40 radio itself was fresher than it ever could hope to be. Hardly the same can be said today.
..

so the problem is people assuming that new wave is a particular sound rather than a musical period. from the ska and mod revivals to the new romantics...all new wave. They all emerged from around 77 to 81 and were seen as a contrast to punk rock, though many were influenced by punk bands. People who say Madness aren't new wave because they are "ska" or that joy division is post punk because its darker and less poppy than new wave, obviously have no idea what new wave is about. There is no typical "new wave" sound, it is simply a period in music history covering many bands and styles. Obviously some styles such as country or heavy metal are not new wave, as these have always been very non mainstream genres anyway. In the US however new wave later became associated with the british acts who were popular in the billboard charts ie thompson twins,a-ha, wham etc. This is an example of a genre which changes meaning over time. In the US new romantics were called "new pop" and this label was applied to bands such as spandau, duran and culture club. New Wave peaked in 83, and declined around 85/86. Bands such as Propaganda and King were seen as the last New Wave acts. After that we got producer led pop in the UK such as SAW. In the US however the music scene became dominated by house, techno and grunge. The British music scene would not gain credibility again until the Britpop explosion of 94/95, though Britpop, unlike New Wave was a musical style (guitar based and beatles 60s influenced)

Kraftwerk are NOT New Wave. They emerged way before even punk rock began. For New Wave you are looking at bands who emerged betweeen 77 and 83 mainly.

ps if you search Billboard magazine on google books, you can find lots of references to new wave even in the mid 1980s. I think any attempt to narrow the "new wave" genre is futile. There is no logical argument why the B52s are new wave but Talking Heads aren't. It is crazy.

No. But then again, neither are 90% of the other topics in this section of the forum so it fits right in.
