Devo - Are We Not Men & Freedom Of Choice Deluxe

<br>Darn Warner Bros., if we'd wanted Devo Live, we would get Devo Live. We want the rare b-sides and unreleased tracks. How about even a dvd with rare tv appearances. Pinkyblue82 is right, boring!

More like: "How STUPID of WB not to include: rare tracks/12"/extended versions of songs on these? nice way to not make $$$ on these". I, too, will be holding onto my originals, and not partaking in buying these, sorry. W/all of the material they have, they release live stuff? I have "Devo Live", it's ok. Not worth getting 2 copies of it though.

Huge disappointment.

however: i'd watch for things like the alternate "whip it" demo, the alternate "turn around" demo, and "red shark," which became "it's not right." all three of these are recently unearthed gems that are downloads you get with the purchase of tickets to the band's album concerts this fall: they are doing an album a night of both of these releases, which is frankly THRILLING.[/quote]

Just so you know, the "Whip It" and "Turnaround" demos are identical to the ones issued on "Recombo DNA" in 2000...despite Club Devo's claim that they are "recently unearthed."

ugh. that's really too bad. and the tracklists for the remasters are not too thrilling either. i WILL be happy to have remasters on the first and third albums though- it's about time, frankly. the inclusion of the live tracks on "freedom of choice" are the most troubling though... WE HAVE THESE.

I went to Devo's official site, trying to get a note off to them, about our displeasure in the "demo/live" tracks being offered up for these "re-releases"? I was going to even send a link to this site, but, had no way of sending it to them.

I would imagine(and maybe I'm giving them/the label too much credit here) if they found out? they might possibly try to correct these? or at least, try to correct it for future re-releases?

Are these track listings even confirmed? I reserve judgment until I get official confirmation. These certainly do not seem like bonus tracks worthy of deluxe reissues.

As for the remastering, hopefully they will use the same masters as the Japanese box set. Those sound really, really good.

Okay, I have received official confirmation from Club Devo that these track listings are correct. Very disappointing!

The live Q&A tracks are from the London anniversary show.

There will be an exclusive 3 disc version of Are We Not Men only available from Club Devo with a DVD of the live performance, which will also be on iTunes.

Try to contain your excitement.

yes, i've been moaning and bitching about the new deluxe re-issues, and while i am really happy the albums are finally remastered i was not thrilled with the bonus content. a concert from this year? THAT'S the bonus content on this masterpiece? boo.

BUT THAT GOT ME THINKING.
was there even anything left in the vaults? devo have managed to get lots of stuff to us through the years on many different cd's. and so i did a little looking through the cd collection and this is what i found: we get no bonuses because maybe there are no more!

here's the deal:
"demos" released on hardcore devo vol. 1:
jocko homo
social fools
mongoloid

"demos" on hardcore devo vol 2:
be stiff

on "greatest misses"
be stiff
satisfaction
jocko homo
("be stiff" ep versions)

on "live: mongoloid years":
paranoias
praying hands
uncontrollable urge
mongoloid
gut feeling
sloppy
come back jonee
jocko homo

on "pioneers":
mongoloid (stiff ep)

on "recombo dna":
sloppy (demo)

so that's a lot of extras! really, we could have had some remastered versions of these (especially the ryko stuff)- but i think extras would have been all stuff we already had anyway, you know?

i'll quit my bitching.

however: "dev-o live" on freedom of choice is just lazy and bullshit.

In terms of songs that have been officially released, yes, it's possible that there are not many demos/live recordings/etc. left unavailable. But there are plenty of songs that fit into the "hardcore" category of songs recorded early and never released. Devo recorded pretty prolifically. I don't have my copy of Recombo DNA on hand, but as I recall, the liner notes mention digging through a crapload of tapes, and I think there are pictures showing a huge spread of demo tapes.

You can argue what's appropriate for this specific release (and what's likely to appeal to the five people who pick up this reissue but don't know anything about Devo), but in terms of what's left in the vaults, man, I get the feeling they could release a 10-CD set without breaking a sweat.

This is as good a time as any to plug Booji Boy's Basement:

What about social fools from the be stiff ep? I don't believe that has been put on CD at all. Or how about just putting the entire ep remastered on the AWNM re-release?

forgot to put that one. it's on the virgin records two-fer of "q:a"/"devo live" that came out in the mid 90's. still in print, i think. so there is another one we already have...
