Thanks, Gavin, this is certainly news to me. It's upsetting to see U2 would lend their hard to get stuff strictly through iTunes, but since there is that "special" U2 iPod, I guess there's a trade-off somewhere.
Incidentally, since you stopped at the "War" era, I'd recommend the b-side of "New Year's Day", "Treasure (or Whatever Happened to Pete the Chop). I don't know if you're familiar with it or not, but not only is it my favorite b-side by U2, it's my favorite song by them as well. Worth checking out.

Treasure is now on the 2CD remastered version of the album War.
The iTunes set is mostly comprehensive, but it doesn't include "Wire (Dub)" from an old NME 7" sampler included with the magazine.

and is not on the remastered 2CD versions of the first 3 albums

I am hoping The Unforgettable Fire will get the same 2-cd remaster treatment. Wire (dub mix) would hopefully end up on that one since the original is from that album. I do have the old NME single, but the sound definitely has room for improvement...

all of the original b-sides, live versions, mixes and non-album singles and then some were included in the recent reissues of boy, october and war. they also appeared on the itunes complete u2 box 4 years ago. a remastered reissue of under a blood red sky is due at the end of september (no bonus tracks listed) and the dvd debut of the related concert video is due at the same time. amazon and cd universe have both the cd and dvd available for pre-order. a deluxe edition containing both discs is also listed. as much as u2 exploit their fans, at least edge is doing the remastering and he did a wonderful job i think. boy, october and war are with every penny and anyone fond of any/ all would not be wasting their money in my book by paying extra for the deluxe versions with the bonus cds. considering how they got everything right so far with the first three, and with the joshua tree, i'm very optimistic the dub mix of 'wire' will finally debut on cd when they reissue the unforgettable fire. the only thing that sucks in my book is that with their new album supposedly due this fall i'm betting they'll put that reissue and the rest back at least a year or two so they can promote the new album. i've been a fan since 1980 when my brother sent me a tape from college with boy on one side and the clash's black market clash on the other. i still love them, but i'd rather have the rest of the remastered reissues (they could stop after achtung baby and i'd be fine with it) first then the new album but that's just me i suppose.

so your comment "all of the original b-sides, live versions, mixes and non-album singles and then some were included in the recent reissues of boy, october and war." is not correct

my mistake - i only ever had the irish pressing (which was backed with boy/ girl live) of i will follow on colored wax from the u2 4 play pack, never the u.s. or canadian single (backed with out of control live). still, edge did an amazing job on these and any fan of u2 will not be disappointed. compared to how many (most?) reissues skimp on the extras, i think it's a minor flaw considering you could just buy a download of that live version separately and that the concert it's from has been one of the most widely available u2 boots since 1981 and u2 did include the full concert with the itunes box set.

I wish they wouldve given "I Will Follow" the same treatment they did "New Years Day" on the new remasters, as far as remixes/bonus/extended mixes goes, what a wonderful song. I was hoping they'd do several versions of "New Years Day" and add different/extended mixes, and they did.

That's because New Year's Day actually had a bunch of remixes done when it was originally issued, whereas I Will Follow didn't.

Even the "new" high energy dance version of NYD was done almost 10 years ago according to the liner notes. (BTW it's pretty awful compared to the original 12" mixes, in my opinion.)
