What about the sound quality of their first release, that has now been remastered? anyone have this yet? and if so, whats the quality like on it? seems they're hit and miss? I'll keep my original if the remaster is shit quality sound wise.

The first issue is ok, except for the appalling drop outs on the beginning of Girls on Film, it's compressed and the audio level has been whacked up, better remaster than Spandau's JTG. I still have to compare this to the last issue (which were compressed to buggery, see 7ATRT above)....... I haven't returned it yet....so must be pretty satisified (expect Girls...awful, awful).....

The bonus is great (even thou most of these were issued on other comps etc)

I've now amassed a truly ridiculous amount of Duran CDs, but here is a quick summary for you:

The new 2010 remaster of the first album sounds *horrible*. First, there is a weird mis-fire in the intro to Girls On Film (the camera sound starts at the wrong volume, twice, before kicking in properly). Second, "Planet Earth" has been destroyed by overcompression. It's not even a matter of taste - it distorts, and has a crazy pumping effect. The rest of the album is shrill and over-bright. Seems like they were trying to bring out the hi-hats but overshot by a huge amount. Huge huge disappointment. The bonus tracks fare a little better, nothing is as egregiously bad as Planet Earth. The 2003 remaster is miles ahead, and for my money is the best one. The original 80's CD is very quiet and dull.

I don't have any problems with Seven And The Ragged Tiger, or Arcadia. They obviously have had some loudness maximizer applied but it's nowhere near the level of the first album. One thing you have to remember is that these are typical mid-80's productions so there's not a lot of dynamic range to begin with.

One final note - the "Singles 81-85" 3-CD set has been remastered - it is totally different than the original 13-CD box set. It sounds great. Probably the best version of all those tracks.

How exactly do you know it's different from the original box set? Does it have 2009 digital remaster under or next to the track titles ? I have the box and i wasn't going to bother with this 3 cd set as i assumed it would just be a direct transfer of the tracks from the box. I wish they would get their arses in gear and release the second one because the box i have got has that copy control shite on it and the sound quality is poor.

That said...which of all the new remasters are the ones to buy, and stay away from in all of your opinions?

Damn, I bought that three-disc singles set and gave it to a friend for her birthday. Guess I'll have to borrow it to compare :-).

It's easy enough to tell if it's been remastered. You just rip them and compare the waveforms.

The 3 cd set is good, very good, but have to compare with the original 13 cd disk set........i listened again to Planet Earth and it's distorted.....again along with Spandaus first LP, a classic debut I love is fucked up......

it's not like there was a previous remaster of the Spandau one to fall back on like we have with the Duran Self titled one.

Damn shame......now if this was remastered the way it should along with Spandau I would of quite happily disposed of my previous versions, but have to wait again for another remaster in what another five years time...

I have this CD from 1994 http://www.discogs.com/Duran-Duran-Dura ... ase/929579 and to be perfectly honest it's sound a hell of a lot better than the 2003 remaster and this latest pile of crap.

It sounds completely different. I'll see if I can make a quick mp3 to demonstrate.

Avoid the 2010 first album. The 2003 version is the best one.

For Rio, it's a toss-up. The 2003 one sounds a hair better (but it's very very subtle). The 2009 one has a million bonus tracks, which may make it more worthwhile for you. I listened to most of them once and haven't really felt compelled to listen again. All the interesting ones (to me) are duplicated on Singles 81-85, and the 2009 3cd version of that is fantastic.

The 2009 Singles 81-85 is definitely the one to get.

The 2010 Ragged Tiger and Arcadia are fine.

Disclaimer: my opinions only... but you asked :)

Regarding the three-disc singles set, I compared it to the CD singles boxset:

I used EAC's compare .wav utility (which automatically adjusts for any offset), and it is different.

However, I compared the waveform from two tracks (Planet Earth, Hungry Like the Wolf Night Version) with my eyes, and they looked pretty much identical.

My bottom line: While different, they're not different enough that I would consider them remastered. The credits are the same for both (Mastered by Nick Webb at Abbey Road Studios). With EMI's financial difficulties, if these were remastered, I would think that they would have advertised it as such, in order to get more sales.

When are those 3 disc DD Greatest Hits singles boxes coming out? Are they supposed to take ther place of the 2 singles box sets from years ago?

You mean what we've been talking about? The first set came out late last year:
http://www.amazon.com/Singles-81-85-Duran/dp/B002N7FIP0

There's been no news if there will be a second set. The second singles boxset has too much material to fix on three discs, in any case.

Thats the one...thanks for the info.....this has all the singles from all 13 discs from the other box set on it?

Should I buy this one, and trade/sell off my other box set, or keep the original?

whats wrong with the second one(that hasn't been released yet)?
