New Wave Outpost Forum

Here are the standouts in my collection:

Favorite single disc:

Hard To Find Classics: Alternative 80's- A 1997 Canadian comp on Polygram. First appearance of Screaming Blue Messiahs "I Wanna Be A Flintstone (extended mix)" on a comp.

Could live without "Fish Heads" though...

Favorite series (in no order):

Hardest Hits series.
Rhino's "Just Can't Get Enough" series.
SPG's Classic Alternatives series
Retro: Active series.
Richard Blade series.

Those are all fine series.

I'm quite fond of the German "Pop & Wave" series. It's quite strong on the UK/European artists which are more to my liking.

The entire DIY set is tough to beat for early seminal classics:

Come Out and Play
Shake It Up
Teenage Kicks
Starry Eyes
Anarchy in the UK
The Modern World
Blank Generation
Mass Ave
We're Desperate

It's pretty damned genious, and whoever put it together really felt the love man!

Depending on what mood I'm in, I prefer "Pop & Wave" (I have volumes 1-8, don't know if there are any more?) for euro new wave, and "Just Can't Get Enough" for quirky, more American based new wave.

Also, there was also a cool series out of England in the early 90's called "A Kick Up The 80's", which is really good. Like Pop and Wave, it featured a lot of songs you don't find on standard comps.

I thought that was a great series also, although I don't own any. Living in Oblivion is good too; it's much like the Just Can't Get Enough series.

Sparks- Tips for Teens
Shock- Angel Face
Polyrock- Love Song
Bow Wow Wow- Orang-Outang
Landscape- Eurpoean Man
Robert Ellis Orrall- Call the Uh-Oh Squad
Polyrock- Changing Hearts

Here are those track timings

Pop and Wave, Just Can't Get Enough, Richard Blades' Flashback Favorites (along with Oglio's Flashback! which was the prequel to the Richard Blades collection), DIY, Classic Alternatives, Hardest Hits, RetroActive, Sedated in the 80s, Living In Oblivion, Generation Eighties (pretty much in this order). There's lots of stuff you will NOT find in ITunes (though ITunes is slowly but surely improving. There's still lots of new wave wonders that have yet to meet the CD or digital format).

20 of Another Kind (Polydor)
The Enigma Variations (Enigma/Restless)
Rock 80 (Columbia)
Slash: the Early Sessions (Slash)
Let Them Eat Jellybeans! (Alternative Tentacles)

If you can find them, buy them. Sell your firstborn if you have to.

My favorite compilation is actually a D.J. remix by Fatboy Slim. It was called 'Fatboy Slim Beats Up The N.M.E.' and was released in 1997 before Fatboy got MASSIVE. (it was released on casette only format and came with a copy of the N.M.E, i picked up in London) -I'm sure that not too many are around, but it is by far the best DJ mix i've ever heard...

Sire issued a bunch of good compilations about 15 years ago, with titles like Just Say Yes/Da/Mao. There were a lot non-NW songs on them, though.

UK Compilations are often 2 and 3 disc.

I favourite 80's compilation is "Blast from the past" based on the book by Ben Elton.

On Vinyl I'd have to say:

IRS Greatest Hits Vol.2&3 (Skafish,Chelsea,Oingo,The Stranglers)
Blits (Slow Children,Bow Wow Wow,Polyrock)
Radio Tokyo Tapes Vol 1-3 (Fibonaccis,Savage Republic,Minutemen)
Slash: the Early Sessions (X,Violent Femmes,Rank & File,Germs)
Sharp Cuts (Suburban Lawns,Bates Motel,The Last)
Wanna Buy A Bridge? (Essential Logic,Young Marble Giants,Raincoats)

My favorite compilations by far are the Indie Scene: History of British Independent Music series. Single discs for each year 1977 through 1986 and chock full of stuff you never see on typical comps. Here's the listing for 1982's CD:

3:40 Aztec Camera -- Pillar to Post
4:18 The Wild Swans -- Revolutionary Spirit
3:36 The Room -- Things That Have Learnt to Walk That Ought to Crawl
2:53 Everything But the Girl -- Night and Day
3:33 The Alarm -- Marching On
3:03 Robert Wyatt -- Shipbuilding
5:56 New Order -- Temptation
4:33 Fad Gadget -- Saturday Night Special
3:28 Lori and the Chameleons -- Lonely Spy
2:40 Wall of Voodoo -- On Interstate 15
3:48 Thomas Leer -- All About You
3:59 Shriekback -- My Spine (Is the Bassline)
3:02 The Higsons -- Conspiracy

3:11 The Marine Girls -- On My Mind

3:45 The Adicts -- Viva the Revolution
3:42 The Lords of the New Church -- Open Your Eyes
