A compilation cd with tracks from the Canadian label Ready Recrds is scheduled for release Nov 7 2006:

http://www.amazon.com/20th-Century-Mast ... F8&s=music

I am familiar with Ready Records because it was Spoons original label, and believe that it no longer is in business.

I can recognize Old Emotions and Romantic Traffic as Spoons tracks, Don't Walk Past as Blue Peter, and I Got News (sic) as Men Without Hats, but am not familiar with the other tracks,

Can anybody identify the other artists?

for bonus points, was there a volume 1, and if so, what was on that?

Track Listings
1. Chinese Graffiti
2. I Never Told You So
3. You Can't Hold Me Anymore
4. Stay
5. You're My World
6. Old Emotions
7. Don't Walk Past
8. Can't Shake You
9. Steal This Girl
10. Can't Stand Still
11. I Got News
12. Romantic Traffic

Ready went kaput around 1984.

Their list of artists was quite short if I recall.

Ready's first release, the Demics ep Talk's Cheap now goes for $100.00 + for the vinyl. I used to see tons of them in the cheap bins for $1.00...man, if I only knew.

These are only $10.85 at CD Universe for each volume, as opposed to Amazon's price of $17.99 each. Almost 2 for 1 savings.

$10.85 is about right...it's a mundane collection of songs. I wouldn't pay more than that.

I just ordered both of these from CD Universe. They promptly charged my PayPal account, then sent me an email saying that they were both backordered[:(] This has happened the last 2 times I ordered from them.

They rarely do that unless you order prior to the release date, which was today I believe. Thus, if you pre-order, they show backorder until the release date. For me personally, I've had nothing but excellent luck with CD Universe, not only pricing, but the depth and breadth of what they offer - amazing.

So do they actually have these things on hand, or do they order as they get orders from customers?

If it goes for that, this is practically a steal!

Can't say I know who they are, although I'm a little surprised they picked Spoons' "Conventional Beliefs" over "Tell No Lies." Not that the latter was a good song, but wasn't it one of their 3 biggest hits over there?

I'm not sure if Tell No Lies ever got any play here other than on CFNY, and even on NY, not that much play. The thing that used to boost their air time here was that they were local, and were on the station quite regularly, if I recall correctly.

Conventional Beliefs got a fair bit of play here.

Here's a review from Eye, a Toronto magazine (they don't mention the Steve Blimkie songs, a glaring oversight IMO):

THE BEST OF READY: 20TH CENTURY MASTERS - THE MILLENNIUM COLLECTION VOLUMES ONE & TWO ***

The budget Millennium CD line can often be counted on for surprisingly decent compilations, and these are two of the more lovingly assembled ones. They also contain a wealth of local history - Ready Records was the hippest label in Toronto (via London, Ont.) during the late-‘70s/early-‘80s punk/new wave uprising, and a number of notable area acts are represented here. Volume One kicks off with The Demics' famously hard-to-find anthem "New York City," and Blue Peter's surprisingly raw punk side is showcased on "Same Old Place." As well, The Extras' hilarious ode to condoms, "Circular Impression," will bring back memories of listening to Dr. Demento's radio show, while The Spoons' "Nova Heart" demonstrates Canadian new wave at its peak. More trad-rockers like Colin Linden, Santers and jazz-funksters Manteca showcase the label's diversity, though they make less memorable appearances.

Volume Two continues with more tracks by the same bands, though it soon becomes clear who were the moneymakers (and whose discographies should be explored further). "Don't Walk On Past" sees Blue Peter successfully move into Spandau Ballet territory, while most ‘80s children will shed a tear to The Spoons' "Old Emotions" and "Romantic Traffic." A guilty yet affordably priced pleasure. CHRIS ROLFE
