Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough Series

Rhino's Just Can't Get Enough Series

Postby Bob M » Thu Apr 24, 2003 2:13 pm

I thought Rhino did a good job including both widely popular new wave songs along with songs that weren't as popular or widely played, but featured some of the other styles of new wave music and some artists that had good material.

I've got seven of the volumes so far but am hoping to acquire the rest along the way. I'm just hoping Rhino doesn't start discontinuing them because they did a nice job having a 15-volume set focusing on new wave music. Although even that ends up including a small portion of new wave, it's still more comprehensive than most collections which cover that genre.

Yeah, Rhino did a great job on that one, even if it did feature lots of American new wave and power pop oddities (many which were only popular in Southern California)--that's what makes it such an interesting, not-your-run-of-the-mill series. My friend St

Yeah, JCGE is a really good set; it includes most of the big hits with some really rare regional stuff you won't find elsewhere. I have the whole set too. <img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

I find them a great convienience for DJing, but I was a little disappointed in the selection. The more "obscure" artists represented tend to be from the West Coast. A lot of East Coast bands like the Pylons, Medium Medium, ESG, the Vels, and a lot more

For anyone, like me, who is partial to the 80s New Wave sound from Britain and Europe, I would highly recommend the "Pop & Wave" series from Sony Music Media (Germany). While many of the biggest worldwide hits are included, this set of 10 doub

The Just Can't Get Enough series is great until you get to the Halloween and Christmas compilations. Those were a stretch to say the least.

For an even better compilation, try SPG Hardest Hits or Classic Alternatives. Some are discontinued, but even the ones available are amazing. China Crisis, Endgames and Heaven 17 12 inch versions.

Rhino's compilations are very hit and miss.

The first one I got from them got me into Martha and the Muffins. Never would have found them out otherwise. It's helped me explore a few one-hit-wonders here and there.

But on some of their other releases

Does anyone know why #7 in the series was pulled from the market before the others were discontinued? I've got a copy that I burned from the library, but it's a really crappy mix; among the worst of the series. I enjoyed the set for the most part, but I

I don't work for Rhino, but my best guess would be that Vol.7 just sold out first.

The JCGE series was mainly released as individual CDs and was widely available in retail record stores. Like any compilation set, certain volumes will be more popular

as far as i can remember..volume 7 was hardly ever available in stores..something about not having licensing for a certain song that appeared on the cd..perhaps it was laurie anderson's oh superman. I found one on line a few months ago for big bucks ($35

Agreed. While it is probably hard to not include songs like 'Mickey' (or 'The Look of Love' 'Iran' 'She Blinded Me With Silence' 'Relax' 'Shout' 'Cars' etc) on a fifteen-volume NW compilation series (geez, that's how many songs?), the overexposure
