"love on your side: the best of thompson twins"

...comes out in september. it's 2 cds, 36 tracks, and judging by the prior releases of other artists by this label i thought there would be some rarities or bsides. and i was wrong.

what we DO get is:
2 songs from "set"- guess which ones!
all of the "quick step" songs
all of the "gap" songs
all but 3 songs from "future days"
6 songs from "close to the bone"
and the '88 remix of "in the name of love"

le sigh.
now for thompson twins newbies this is fantastic, because it's the "popular" thompson twins, and it's extensive. but for those of us still waiting for "compass points" or "fallen out" or "love lies fierce" or "very big business" or "nurse shark"...well, we're out of luck again.

funny enough, the website over at demonmusicgroup.co.uk says there are rarities on it. i guess that would be "in the name of love"? no, "bouncing"... that would be it.

BLAH!

Music Club are causing problems. Cherry Red attempted to license "A product of" and "Set", which are owned by Sony now and not EMI as previously. They were denied. Guess why? Just like with the Altered Images denial, because Music Club is putting out this redundant piece of nonsense.

and yet there aren't any "product of" tracks on it!
this reminds me of the "gap" reissue with the "future days" era bonus tracks. retarded!

if you look at some of the other releases, like the ttd'arby, there are some 12" versions, bsides, etc. etc. but why this thompson twins thing? because some of it is out of print? that makes it a rarity? i'm sure anyone could find "close to the bone" in a cut-out bin or at a used shop!
crazy. and if there was ever a band that could warrant a comprehensive b-side and extended collection it would be thompson twins. hell, you'd need 2 cds just for all the "hold me now" and "lay your hands on me" mixes!

For all the "hold me now" and "lay your hands on me" mixes - why do record companies put so little tought into these compilations?

I bought a budget thompson twins cd a few years ago with "lay your hands on me" on it.

I think overlooking such mixes is crazy.

I was expecting some decent re-releases but not another compilation. No, no, no, I'm not spending money on that.

Music Club are doing like some other labels. They are licensing compilations that are consisting ONLY of previously mastered material. This way they can repackage a "new" release that is nothing more than a collection of songs from previous compilations. I can guarantee you that no master tapes were touched for this, and many other similarly released compilations. They save a large cost by just compiling from existing CD's. That's the ugly truth. At this point in the reissue of old artists, there's a dwindling chance of anyone going back to any master tapes to remaster anything. If it's not done from previously mastered CD's, it's going to be done from vinyl.

About a year ago I had done all the research necessary to find out about master tape restoration. In truth, it costs only a couple thousand to get a decent reel to reel master machine and convection oven for tape restoration, though the "reputable" companies that do this work "professionally" charge unspeakable amounts for popping a tape in the over for 4 hours. If it was feesable for me to invest in this hardware, I would do it in a heartbeat to get my hands on authentic studio masters and "remaster" properly. Currently, it's a problem of cheepness (of the licensing labels), and greed (of the mastering facilities).

Man that tracklist reeks. I don't own anything by this crew because, with almost all their hits, you can just imagine some suburban hausfrau in Iowa ironing her husband's plaid shortsleeve dress shirts and humming along to "Doctor Doctor" or whatever and thinking "wow, I'm into the Thompson Twins so I must be everso with it!!!!"

That said, I might buy their first two LPs on CD, assuming they are nothing like the later crap.

and another best of again... that makes number... 'wait, I lost count' - with bands like Thompson Twins and also A Flock Of Seagulls, in regular intervals, expect the almost same best of repackaged again in another form [at times more best of releases than regular albums]... and all those 12" mixes that could be used, not that I would mention a decent dvd-compilation... nah, let's hope we find some more people to buy this, produced at almost no cost, maybe a few easy bucks for the company, could work, has worked before already.
hm, how come one is not surprised when sales are going down the drain?

Wow this is pretty poopy. There's such a wealth of remixes and b-sides from the Thompson Twins! Someone could make a fortune if they actually did some research and put a little effort into it. I'll have to post some TT vinyl transfers I guess now, in protest - and they wonder why there's so much music sharing online!!!!!

OK, as promised, 10 Thompson Twins tracks are posted in the "Thompson Twins mixes!" thread in the "Obscure" forum.....
