BOSTON UNDERGROUND - 1979-1982 (Moulty 110; USA)

BOSTON UNDERGROUND - 1979-1982 (Moulty 110; USA)

Maybe Randy or tileboy can comment further:

BOSTON UNDERGROUND - 1979-1982 (Moulty 110; USA) "Post-punk from
groups who played the legendary Underground Club, 1979-1982. Includes
unreleased material that sounds like early The Cure, Joy Division,
Gang Of Four, etc., but with Boston accents! Bands are: Native
Tongue, Insteps, Young Snakes, Lori Green, Dangerous Birds, Maps, Art
Yard. Lots of cool photos, info on these little-known bands who never
got any attention or recognition, some of these groups never released
records back then. Includes a 4-page booklet, lots of nice photos."

Dangerous Birds were an all girl group from what I remember--think they actually had a decent tune Alpha Romeo or something like that. Like Coop said--Young snakes were Aimmee Mann.--Not sure of the rest though Native Tongue sounds familiar.

I remember Native Tongue having an ep or two out, from my recollection they had a Gang of Four, Pylon kind of sound.

By the way there's a new book out on the history of Boston rock , by
Brett Milano called " The Sound of our Town". Available at Newbury Comics.

I never made it to the Underground, but from what I understand the last night it was open ,I can't remember who played the Neats maybe or Pixies, the place was trashed by the crowd that night.

I'm extremely late to the party, but they had an EP (self-titled, 1981) and an album ("Yowl," 1983), plus a compilation cut or two. (Their take on "Do You Hear What I Hear" off some Boston Xmas album comes to mind.) Forget Gang of Four; they were Mission of Burma copycats all the way. (Which was fine by me, because they were better songwriters than Mission of Burma.) "Yowl" is a pretty solid album, highlighted by the killer track "Blame It on Gravity" and the almost-as-good "Ali." Two-thirds of the band (Louis Selvitella and Lee Leffler) now perform as Torso. Total 180 from Native Tongue.

I don't know what the third dude (Michael Frackleton) is up to, but you can hear most of their catalogue at their new myspace page.

As for Maps, they did the "I'm Talking to You" single (which you can find on the "D.I.Y.: Mass Ave" CD). Their frontwoman, Judy Grunwald, went on to front Salem 66, who released 4 albums and an EP from '84-'90 (little of it very good).

I only remember Art Yard as the band that drummer Jim Clements was in before Radio Novena and Dumptruck. Radio Novena had a great minimalistic single, "My Spine," in 1982. Dumptruck released a truck-load of crap.

Hey Somebody, thanks for all the info. I got the "D.I.Y.: Mass Ave" on cassette from Pic 'n' Sav (now Big Lots) a few years back for 99 cnets... What a great tape, it's somewhere in the car... was that released on Rhino Records?

Rhino, yeah. If you got the cassette, you should pick up the CD. It has extra tracks. Off the top of my head, Neats' "6" was inexplicably dropped from the tape, as was the aforementioned "Alpha Romeo" by Dangerous Birds.

http://members.cox.net/inferiority/thal ... k/bio.html

Don't have their single (mostly because I've been outbid for it at least twice on eBay), but I do have another Propeller comp record which includes a track of theirs. I guess it must be "Emergency." (Also have a few copies of the original Propeller 7" EP that marked the debut of "6." Best damn thing Neats ever did. Best damn thing Propeller ever put out.)

Apologies to schwenko for not knowing a damn thing about Insteps or Lori Green. They might have been the ones who never got any attention or recognition or released any records!

Great info Somebody,Now I'm going to have to go on a search for those two records. I still hear a GOF/Pylon vibe going on,with Burma mixed in.

They released records and got some recognition, so they don't fit the requirements for this release.
