Have "quit" working with Cherry Red

Have "quit" working with Cherry Red

Postby Rubellan » Wed Feb 20, 2008 8:00 pm

Just as an FYI to all, today I offered my "resignation" to Cherry Red records. As you know, over the past 2+ years I worked on a number of projects for the label, and still have 4 others soon to be released. But an array of surprising, disappointing and unforunate issues and circumstances encouraged me to sever my ties with the company. Without getting into detail, the qualities I've tried to encourage from my involvement have been useless, and I was asked to do things that went against everything I believed in regarding the quality that I insist on, as and audiophile and a consumer. There have been some very questionable decisions made, and levels of disrespect that I've encountered. I hope everyone continues to enjoy the CD's that I've worked on, but I think your own experience will give you an idea of what to expect in the future.

It's interesting...on their web's home page, CR is encouraging visitors to mail them...

"If you have ideas for future releases on any of the Cherry Red labels, please don't hesitate to e-mail with your suggestions."

and I did it several times...

and never received returning mail...

Not that my opinion matters to you, but I'm very sorry to hear that Scott. I know it was an absolute high doing what you love to do most, and better than most high paid professionals in the field. Your mastering is meticulous and it really sucks that it wasn't fully appreciated. I do hope something else comes along so you're able to do some further mastering of future 80's releases. A talent such as yours shouldn't be wasted. Take care.

That's a bummer Scott.

I would love to hear more detail if you ever feel like sharing your personal experiences with the reissue industry. I find the "behind the scenes" stuff pretty interesting!

Scott! Sorry to hear that brother, as I've always looked forward to your posts and so forth regarding CR releases/remasters. Shame they can't seem to listen to the important folks such as yourself. They're losing out most, as I've seen/read/heard you've been the most meticulous person, trying to look out for us fans/collectors, in regards to the quality of the product(s) CR releases, that, you should be commended for. We appreciate your hardwork and all you've done for us.

Let us know what your future plans are? I have a feeling you haven't heard the last of CR.

If its not fun it's time to quit. Those are words I have lived by since I was a teenager.

Thanks for all the hard work and love you put into the remastering process. CR might not have appreciated it but we all do.

Well, that's a shame as the reissues I have (such as Dead Or Alive) are excellent; as someone who has been involved in the reissue process, I know how frustrating it can be when others involved don't take the care that each project deserves. Sometimes the argument for "cost saving" over quality isn't justified.

I got their reissue of The Story Of A Young Heart - it sounds decent enough on first listen, although I'm sure if I listened closely with headphones (or if I had software to show the details) I'd find some flaws. I'm guessing the main tracks are mastered from the old CD and the bonus tracks are from vinyl. To me, the bonus tracks sounded a little muddy compared to the album version, although not overwhelmingly so. The booklet is pretty decent. If you don't own this CD, it's probably worth it but not necessary if you do have the original.

Again, it would have been better if Scott had done the mastering...

Scott, thanks for the thoughts on Wounded Bird. Since the packaging is so basic, it's good to know they are at least using the original master tapes. They have definitely unearthed some treasures over the past few years - especially from U.S. based new wave bands.

Scott,

I too lament the situation at Cherry Red. It's so sad, and a crying shame that they don't appreciate you for all that you've done. You have a lot to be proud about with the remasters you've done and we all appreciate your hard, meticulous work. I certainly feel that your efforts will get the notice of some other label who will be blessed with your talents. Take care.

With intense admiration,

Jeffrey

Sorry to hear you're no longer involved. You truly did an OUTSTANDINg job on the two projects I've gotten (DeaD Or Alive's "Sophisticated Boonm Boom" and King's "Bittersweet"). Hopefully, some other company will snatch you up & get your blessing on other projects!

Regardsarama,

Jon
