The Rarities disc is still planned and has a track listing and cover artwork now on their website and should be out by years end. It is 15 tracks I believe.

This should be good. '...Undone' is one of those albums I've hoped for a long time would eventually make its appearance on CD.

Somewhere I have on tape a BBC Radio 1 live show by the Lucy Show broadcast from 1985 I recorded at the time, must dig it out and digitise it sometime...

For Against's Shade Side Sunny Side from 2008 was fantastic; I look forward to the new disc. If they would have relocated to NYC in the 80s we'd be talking about them in the same breath as The Cure, REM, etc...

I have just finished listening to the new For Against album, Never Been, for the second time and I have to say it is fantastic and a magnificent work of art, which is what you would expect from For Against.

The sound is a cross between their classic post-punk and their nineties melodic works making for a very enjoyable listening experience.

The nine tracks includes two instrumentals. This is a band you can listen to over and over again in still be amazed at the intricate soundscapes produced by their music.

And yes, I agree, this is a band who should be in the same breath as the Chameleons, the Sound, Joy Division etc. if only their homebase was in a major capital city. Much like Sad Lovers and Giants, whose locale ultimately kept them off the radar both on radio and in the music press.

Pick up Never Been, the new album, and explore the back catalogue...you will not be disappointed!

Cheers!

Great review! Thanks for posting. For Against are one of my all-time favorite bands. I placed my pre-order immediately upon receipt of the email from Words-On-Music. I've been listening a lot in my car on maximum volume. A real gem indeed. I have never seen them live since they don't really have the draw to warrant a proper tour, so they basically play odd little pockets in Europe and in their home state of Nebraska. They have not been to NYC since the early/mid 90's. I've actually been emailing Harry about having them do some shows with the band I manage, The Lost Patrol in the new year.

My friend Brett and I interviewed Harry Dingman for [sic] Magazine. Read here:

Shred, thank you for the kind comments!

I too rank the band amongst my all-time favourites. I have to say for the uninitiated to For Against's music, please make it a point to become initiated. It's really hard to pin down a favourite album, but I am very partial to Coalesced, but then again it's fair to say I don't really have a clear cut fave as their music is just so consistently brilliant. They are truly a special band that few can match in musicianship and songwriting excellence.

I remember one of the only respectable music journals to give them the due respect they deserve was TROUSER PRESS, who were/still are the bible of New Wave/Post-Punk/Indie/Alternative (insert flavour of the month genre here) music scene. I expect the band will never tour here in Australia but I really believe they can gain a following here with the right promotion.

When I queried Words On Music regarding the band's out of print 90's catalogue (Aperture, Shelf Life, Mason's California Lunchroom) they mentioned the remasters of these discs is on the cards for a potential release in 2010 and 2011.

I will give your magazine a read...

On another note, I have pre-ordered Lucy Show's Undone and believe it is shipping this week.

Lucy Show's "Undone" ships tomorrow per the Words-On-Music website. Another great band!

roc51, you need to subscribe to The Big Takeover, a NYC based magazine. They're champions of For Against and Lucy Show.

You can also listen to Jack Rabid's (of The Big Takeover) radio show on http://www.BreakThruRadio.com. He recently played some new music by Lucy Show's Rob Vandeven. Go to the link above and then click on "program guide" in the upper-right corner (2nd bar), then select Big Takeover under Monday. All the shows are archived as well.

Nice to see some love for For Against, I've been a fan for 20 years and rarely come across anyone that's even heard of them.

Seconding a subscription to the Big Takeover as well. Jack's been putting it out for almost 30 years and is a big fan of the Chameleons / Sound/ Comsat Angels / For Against post-punk sound. And if you don't find something new to try in each issue, they you aren't really a music fan.

...undone arrived today. Sounds nice, but I still think Mania is a better album.
