I've noticed that cds that are not in jewel cases often end up scratched or scuffed. Only a minor problem but if I'm dishing out money for a brand new 2 cd set i dont want any defects. Has anyone else noticed that? Are jewel cases that much more expensive to make ?

I think it's a trend more than cost considerations.
CDs shouldn't be scratched if they came in a digipak, though, since it has a proper tray.
For stuff like the vinyl replica sleeves, I have a bunch of CD slips that I use (which makes it even more like a vinyl replica [:)]).

I hate digipacks, if they get damaged you're screwed. At least jewel cases are easily replaced.

Have to agree i detest digipaks and I'm not too keen on these new super jewel cases either. Only slight problem with jewel cases was if the booklet was to thick it got ripped to shreds every time you took it out U2s Achtung Baby was bad for that.

I think the thickest booklet I ever found was the original Rough Trade version of The Smiths' The World Won't Listen, no idea if later editions made it slimmer.

And the fact that most jewel cases now are made of a slightly thinner plastic. I've got some Virgin releases (O.M.D. especially) from the early 80's that still have their original heavy jewel cases. Yes, they're covered with a fine haze of small scratches, but they're still intact after 20+ years!
Still looking for my girl with auburn hair and tawny eyes...

Like some of the others, I'm not a big fan of digipaks. If the teeth break, you can buy replacement stickers, but the teeth on the stickers are slightly raised, so there's kind of a little bump in the middle.

Super Jewel cases, I don't mind if they are SACDs, but I hate it when they use them on CD-DAs. But it does suck if you break one, especially the older version of the case (narrower "hinge"), since it's near impossible to find those ones.
