I'm afraid that the 2-CD Deluxe Edition only has disc 1 and 2 and not the 3rd with the rest of the remixes and B-sides.

So you've got to fork out a lot of money for the boxset to get a complete set of remixes. I remember earlier this year,
the 2-CD Deluxe Edition of Sparkle In The Rain was good because all of the remixes and B-sides were there. Just like
that box-set, the first 2 discs were repeated on the 2-CD Deluxe Edition. With Once Upon A Time, they have 2 discs
of remixes on the boxset, namely disc 2 and 3, but I don't think they're gonna put the first 3 discs in the 2-CD Deluxe
Edition.

And again, why put A Brass Band In Africa and A Brass Band In Africa Chimes on a Deluxe set?! They were already
included on Sparkle In The Rain.

It's just a con to get people to fork out £44 for the box set if they want the extra tracks on disc 3. Why include Live In The City Of Lights on this when there is a perfectly good remaster which can be picked up quite cheap instead of some unreleased live material. I would imagine the only thing worth buying would be the Blu-Ray for the slightly different mixes of the main album.

because that concert was on the tour, and there is no deluxe version of that.

the bluray is separate, the dvd included will have the same mixes.

not a great listing, but will still get it.

It's a shame that we had to wait 30 years to hear them, too! They are absolutely incredible, in my opinion! I adore the original version already (perhaps my favorite song?), so I was overjoyed when news broke about these unreleased mixes of "Alive & Kicking". I love them! I will be ordering the deluxe box set as soon as it's available from Amazon U.S.

For those looking for lossless files (FLAC) of the audio portion of the deluxe box set, 7digital has them available for download: https://us.7digital.com/artist/simple-m ... er-deluxe/

Bellenger1981 - Thanks so much for pointing that out. I foresee a future where I will buy the 4 unreleased mixes in FLAC for <$50. Because of the collector's sickness within me. Even though A+K is one of my least favorite SM tracks. I have to think that Kevorkian would end up improving the track somehow.

and with the release of the super deluxe version
of once upon a time.. we finally get a few
new unreleased mixes.. 3 of alive and kicking,
and 1 of sanctify yourself.

here's a brief review of just those tracks.
the sound quality is excellent.

1 alive and kicking (kevorkian 12 inch remix) 6m:38s
-------------------------------------------------------------
by far the best version of this song, and although
not my favorite song from the album, this is the remix
that should have been on the 12 inch, and not just an
instrumental.

there are no radical sounds in this mix, it has all
the sounds of a classic remix, with lots of vocal play,
and big drums throughout.. and yes, i can even stand
the robin clarke solos...

it has some really cool breakdowns near the middle,
and a killer guitar solo. jims voice is great, with the oh's,
and whoah's, along with the ba-da-da's used creatively..

overall, its excellent, couldn't ask for more..

2 alive and kicking (12 inch remix) 6m:22s
-------------------------------------------------------------
another great remix... again, should ha ve been released on
the 2nd 12 inch.... nice sparse intro, with just the voices,
and drums... leading into the keyboards, and guitars.

more emphasis on the drums and bass throughout the song.
another cool breakdown near the middle. some similarities
to the kevorkian remix also.

this mix is a little more on the dub side, but still
has enough vocals to make it interesting.

another excellent remix..

3 alive and kicking (7 inch remix) 4m:48s
-------------------------------------------------------------
as expected this 7 inch remix, is quite different from the
released one, and is a shortened edit of the 12 inch remix.

it still has all the highlights of the longer mix, but fades
out earlier. it is a very full edit, and does not sound
chopped up. the parts flow very well.

very good.

4 sanctify yourself (alternative edit) 4m:00s
-------------------------------------------------------------
this version is a just a short take on the song.

along the lines of the album, nothing too fancy about
this cut. its about 1 minute shorter than the album version.
there are some shortened transitions between the verses,
as expected.

it has the same structure, but there are some slight vocal
differences.

an ok version.

=========================================

will be checking out the quality of all the other
tracks afterwards..

here's the reply about the new mixes, and what the tracks were and where they came from:

It starts to clarify what went on with the Alive And Kicking single release. Obviously these new 7" and 12" remixes were prepared but weren't used - leaving the album, instrumental and Up On The Catwalk to be spread thinly across the various formats. They also reveal how the instrumental was put together with pieces of the 12" remixes.

The Clearmountain mixes were pencilled in for the single - the catalogue number is mentioned on the tape boxes. However, the Kevorkian remix has nothing else written on the box so it's uncertain where this was going to fit in.

I was uncertain about including the Alternative Edit of Sanctify Yourself as it's not really that different - there's just a change to the arrangement of the middle-8. Howver, I'd rather put all the versions out there if there's room on the CDs rather than state "Oh, there was another mix of Sanctify Yourself but I didn't think it was different enough." The "Alternative Edit" was the original prepared by Bob Clearmountain - and the final released "Edit" was prepared by Bob Ludwig. (To add confusion, the labelling on the tape box is around the other way, so the so-called "Alternative Edit" was the one which was actually used.)

Don't forget that the 12" remixes of Ghostdancing and Oh Jungeland are longer by 30 seconds. Not enough to make a fuss about on the box packaging but a nice bonus for fans. (Then again, the 12" of Promised You A Miracle is only 30 seconds longer than the 7" so it might've been enough).

There were five reels of "Roughs" in the vault. Three reels turned out to be early versions recorded at during the Barwell Court sessions (and are undated but could be late 1984) and two reels were final preparations from May 1985. Interestingly they cleared up a mystery of the "demo" version of Someone Somewhere In Summertime that was leaked ten years ago. Turns out it was recorded during the Once Upon A Time sessions - the band trying to find new ideas by evolving existing tracks. But these recordings were rather incomplete. And there weren't any demos - the band just evolved everything gradually in the studio.

Song To Boy and Satellite Song didn't turn up later. They did rework one of the unreleased instrumentals from the Old Chapel sessions of January-February 1983 and that appears in a Once Upon A Time arrangement but it didn't progress beyond the rough stage.

All the best,
Simon

Thank you for that information, -1. Is that Simon as in Simon Heyworth (mastering engineer?) I haven't seen the mastering credits because I don't have the box in my hands (yet), but I assume that Simon Heyworth (hopefully) tackled the remastering on this box.

Also, slightly off topic, but Universal Music Direct currently has the Super Deluxe Edition of "Sparkle In The Rain" for $18.99 (U.S. dollars) + shipping. Shipping is about $10, so it's just under $29 with shipping (for anyone interested). I finally ordered by copy last night.

i don't see that on their site?
http://www.musicdirect.com/search.aspx? ... le%20minds

it is simon cornwell, who runs the dreamgiver fansite. he was the consultant for this, and the sparkle in the rain project,
and is also working on future projects.
