more information from simon cornwell on the tracks:
Right... I can finally talk about this now.

> actually simon, can you comment on the alternate mixes,
> rough and demo disc?

There was more scope for this project than Sparkle In The Rain or Once Upon A Time as there was more material in the Universal archive. There was a set of monitor mixes from May 1982 (probably the final recordings from The Vibe Factory sessions) and also a set of roughs. Both sets of recordings were mostly instrumentals (as Jim didn’t record any vocals until the final Townhouse sessions) but the arrangements and content were close to the final album; so they’d prepared well for the final recording at The Townhouse.

Each track was formally recorded and committed to tape in August and September 1982. Walsh didn’t trim the tracks; I think the idea was to keep longer versions for potential 12” releases. Two versions were recorded; a vocal take and instrumental. Then Walsh edited down the tracks to fit on the album. Therefore the “Full Duration Mixes” on CD #5 are these full length versions.

Charlie used these as guides when he produced the DVD-Audio edition of 2005. That’s why many of the tracks on the DVD-Audio are extended and slightly different. So you’ll be getting the original, stereo mixes of these full length tracks for the first time.
Glittering Prize [Full Duration Mix] is missing as that was simply commercially released as the Club Mix. Also New Gold Dream [Full Duration Mix] is very close to the German 12” Remix but features an extra verse at the end. I’d already put King Is White And In The Crowd [Full Duration Instrumental] on CD #2 (it was the basis of the rather mangled Touch Tape instrumental) so the Monitor Mix from May 1982 was used instead.

Promised You A Miracle [Long] is a slightly different version of the track which was intended for the album. It’s got extra percussion over the end – perhaps Mike or Mel were asked to “beef” it up a little. It wasn’t used in the end.

In Every Heaven [Early Version] is a very, very basic demo with just a looped vocal. It’s completely different from the final song.

> i forgot to include the DVD disc, when i was looking at it, and the might also
> have the dvd-a alternate version tracks?
Yes - the DVD and BluRay both include the 2005 DVD-Audio version of the album. (Both have In Every Heaven as a bonus). DVD also includes the promo videos and Top Of The Pops appearances.

> any chance of the 10min plus 'new gold dreams'?
I don't think it exists. Sweeting says that the track ran for over 10 minutes and Walsh edited it down for the album. Well, he edited down the Full Duration Mix and that lasts for over 7 minutes only. And I went through almost every tape in the archive for this one and couldn't find it.

> the instrumental versions of king is white and in the crowd (that
> they used to play before concerts) touch tape version
Yes - that's included.

> Promised You A Miracle 3:59 [Edit]
Yes - that's included.

> Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) canadian promo edit
The A&M US edit is included. When the track listing was compiled there was no room for the SSIS Canadian remix edit. Things shuffled around whilst everything was being compiled, so there was room in the end, but at that point it was too late.

All the best,
Simon

WOW!!! I've been waiting for this for years to come but this is more than I had hoped for in my wildest dreams.
Already pre-ordered.

Love all their early albums but this is my favourite. I bought it 1982 on a school trip to Berlin – for the first time.
I’m not sure how many versions from this album I own now – including the DVD-A and the SACD. But this is a must for me – again :D

Next please Sons And Fascination/Sister Feelings Call

Disc 5 - alternate versions - these are different
from the DVD-A mixes also.
-----------------------------------
1 Someone Somewhere (In Summertime) (Full Duration Version) 5:46
- a longer version similar to the 12 inch

2 Colours Fly And Catherine Wheel (Full Duration Version / Instrumental) 4:42
- instrumental version that was unreleased, very good

3 Promised You A Miracle (Album Remix / Extended Version) 4:53

sounds similar

- instrumental version that was unreleased, very good

- prior unreleased take, very good

8 Hunter And The Hunted (Alternative Take) 5:16
- another alternate version, very good

9 King Is White And In The Crowd (Monitor Mix) 7:14
- a different take on the standard mix, very good

10 In Every Heaven (Early Version) 4:36
- a much slower version, very sparse

================================================

overall, a great package, the track listings are excellent.
there might be a few missing tracks, but not much
(full version of in every heaven, the touch tapes version of king
is white and in the crowd, and the stage instrumental of new gold dream)

other than the missing 5.1 mixes of promised you a miracle, and
colours fly and catherine wheel, this is very comprehensive,
and well worth it.

great news for fans, and collectors.

highly recommended.

one thing to note.

this is the digital version of the set. the first disc has the old 2002 remaster.

the physical CD in the new boxset should be a new 2016 remaster done at abbey road.
i should be getting it shortly.

Listening to the Radio Sessions disc - sound quality on the 1982 John Peel session sounds poor compared to the two David Jensen sessions and doesn't sound as if it has been sourced from the original tapes - anyone else thinking that?

correct, from simon:

The John Peel sessions were taken from a bootleg recording - so the quality isn't as good as the others. It was felt that something was better than nothing, so they have been included. Charlie enjoyed them though. (BBC can't find the recordings - but I think that's because the session took place in May - not February - so perhaps everyone was looking in the wrong place).
