Haircut 100: PAINT AND PAINT 2-Disc Deluxe Edition

Haircut 100: PAINT AND PAINT 2-Disc Deluxe Edition

Postby FanFan » Wed Mar 22, 2017 5:03 pm

Finally, it seems — May 19, 2017 release date for Haircut 100's PAINT AND PAINT from Cherry Pop. A two-disc set, as well, so hopefully we'll get to hear the NORTH OF A MIRACLE that the band didn't get to release.

excellent, was waiting for this forever.... i don't like this album as much as the first one... which is a classic.
this album is pretty weak all around.

the singles were a lot worse, and the remixes weren't that good either...

still, it's good to have as a completist.

I loved watching the VH-1 "Where Are They Now" for Haircut 100. It was so great to see Nick reunite with the rest of the band and find out the reason why he left. It was also funny to see the singer from Paint and Paint apologize to Nick for butchering his songs in concert. I love the second singer's voice though. "So Tired" is one of my favorite songs. Hope they put both the album and 12" version on this compilation.

switching singers was the biggest problem with continuing the band..

anyways, the extra tracks should include:
-----------------

So Tired (Extended Version) (Long Slumber)
So Tired (Forty Winks)
Fish In A Bowl (Deeper Version)

A Prime Time (Late Night Shopping Version)
B Too Up Two Down

A Too Up, Two Down (12 inch version?)
B1 Evil Smokestacking Baby
B2 After It’s All Been Said And Done

Does anybody know if the version "So Tired (Forty Winks)" (12" B-Side) is the same as the album version? And if there is a special 7" version/edit of this song?
I ask because there are just two versions of "So Tired" included here: Album Version and 12" Extended Version Long Slumber.

i doubt it's any different than the album version, otherwise they would have included it on the collection.

so here we have the 2nd album from haircut 100.
they had lost their lead singer, but decided to continue onwards.

package overview
-----------------------
this includes
- the album tracks as is
- the singles, extended mixes
- b sides
- edits
- development mixes which are all in good condition
- live session

the album itself is pretty average overall, songs
range from slow ballads to midtempo ones, and then
the fast poppy sounding ones.

most try to retain some of the fun sound from their
previous albums, but then they just end up sounding
subpar.

the singles and remixes are a mixed bag. most are
not that creative, one is bizarre, and the rest are
not much longer than the album versionsl

the development tracks all sound good, and many
are just instrumental versions of the tracks.
most are very similar to the album versions.

lastly the live session is pretty good, but short.

review of the deluxe version
----------------------------
Disc: 1
1. Fish in a Bowl - a very poppy upbeat song
2. Immaterial - kind of a downbeat moody song
3. So Tired - one of the major singles, rather mellow
4. The Hidden Years - fun song, with lots of horns
5. 40-40 Home - one of the standout songs, lots of hooks, horns, congas etc
6. High Noon - another midtempo song, decent
7. Too Up Two Down - another single, very catchy
8. Benefit of the Doubt - another great song, catchy chorus
9. Prime Time - another single, but a rather mellow song, picks up at the end
10. Where Do You Run to Now? - a ballad, so so
11. Infatuation - nice perky song to end on
-----------------------------------

remixes and b-sides
-----------------------------------
12. Too Up Two Down (7" Remix) - shorter version of the album mix
13. Evil Smokestacking Baby - short, slow plain instrumental
14. After It's All Been Said and Done - decent midtempo song, lush sounds
15. Prime Time (Late Night Shopping Version) - bizarre remix, with rap in it.
i think they didn't know what to do with this, and just threw song
alvin and the chimpmunk speeded up vocals in it.

Disc: 2
1. So Tired (Extended Version - Long Slumber) - similar to album, just longer
2. Fish in a Bowl (Deeper Version) - fun song, slightly longer than album

development mixes
--------------------------------------------
3. Hidden Years Extra (Development Mix) - full vocals
4. Fish in a Bowl (No Vocal-Developmentmix)
5. High Noon (No Vocal-Development Mix)
6. Infatuation (No Vocal-Development Mix)
7. One Word (Development Mix) - full vocals
8. Prime Time (No Vocal-Development Mix)
9. Puppet Man (Development Mix) - no vocals
10. Ted and Harry (Development Mix) - no vocals
11. Too Up Two Down (Development Mix) - no vocals

live bbc sessions
------------------------------------
12. 40-40 Home
13. Immaterial
14. High Noon
15. The Hidden Years

final thoughts
---------------------------------------
if you're a fan of the band get it for sure,
there's lots of good extras, and exclusive tracks.

if you like 80's poppy songs, then you might
like these also.. but not all songs might appeal to you.

if you're a fan of nick heyward, then get his solo stuff,
because although this sounds like their music, the lead
singer is different.

to me, it's an average release. i didn't care for this album,
as its not as memorable as the first one. yes, for completists
it's nice to have the album, mixes and assorted tracks on cd.
but that's about it. there's nothing really pressing to get this,
right away in fact, it might be better to buy a used copy at some point.
