Kraftwerk - 3d Catalog boxsets, bluray and audio, vinyl

Re: Kraftwerk - 3d Catalog boxsets, bluray and audio, vinyl

Postby negative1 » Wed May 10, 2017 8:29 am

the mix is the best represented album out of all them.

that's because most of the songs were played many
times during all the shows.

they've even added some other songs that weren't on the mix
- geiger counter
- boing boom tschak
- techno pop
- planet of visions

they did leave one song
- radioactivity

still, it's a lot of music, which is why it's on 2 vinyl records.

these versions are all 'different' from the album versions,
but may sound similar due to the way they are performed.

here's a review of it live
-------------------------------------------
Or is it? A little explanation is required here.Technically, the album is
integrally performed, because all of its songs feature in tonight's set. However,
the songs are simply interwoven with the others performed this evening, effectively
expanding the 'best of' segment to fill the entire concert.

For example, tonight's show gets under way with 'Numbers', a song that's not
even on 'The Mix'. And all but two of the album's songs ('Dentaku' and 'Pocket
Calculator') are performed live every night, anyway.

An interesting consequence of this is that the show ends up
featuring all of the 'Computer World' songs that were performed when that was the
spotlight album. So, in a sense, this effectively becomes a second 'Computer
World' show.

The 14 minute 'Autobahn' makes a welcome return to the set tonight. It's so
superior to the 8 minute version that there's really no comparison. The big surprise
tonight, however -- if it can be called that -- is that 'Expo 2000' opens the second
encore, in what will turn out to be its only performance of the entire residency.
The reworked version of 'Expo 2000', 'Planet Of Visions', has been performed other
nights, but tonight the original is played before it eventually also morphs into
'Planet Of Visions'.

i tried to figure out what you mean by this, but i have no idea.

what does that mean?

are you saying pre-autobahn is what you liked from them?

and that everything after that is dance? maybe you haven't heard all the slow stuff they've made, which is half of their library and even more since then.

if you don't think electronic music should be dance music, what should it be.....

very confused.

the final album of the set, the tour de france soundtracks.

not really that great of an album, and not very creative either.
very little that has a classic sound to it. aerodynamik is
probably the standout.

almost all the songs on the album are here,
except etape 3 and titantium. they do play
the original 1983 tour de france version though.

the album is about 15 minutes shorter than
the studio version.

here's a review of the concert
------------------------------------
If you're familiar with the album's track list, you might be wondering where
'Tour De France Étape 3' is in tonight's show. Well, as far as I can tell,
it's not played; at least, not really played. Kraftwerk have the tricky and confusing habit
of reusing musical phrases across multiple tracks, so whilst there are certainly
themes from 'etape 3'present in tonight's set, they're more obviously ascribed to
other tracks. 'Titanium', too, isn't really played. Although it's really just a
slower variation of 'Aero Dynamik', I can't hear any evidence of it in that track
as played tonight. All in all, this means that tonight's execution of the album is a good 15
minutes shorter than its studio counterpart.

=============================

and that's all the tracks.

Amazon.de has two listings, one for 3-D Der Katalog (https://www.amazon.de/3-D-Katalog-Blu-r ... 071V35139/) and one for 3-D The Catalogue (https://www.amazon.de/3-D-Catalogue-Blu ... 06Y3VL6ZQ/). Two different covers, two different ASIN numbers, so looks like there's both an English and a German edition.

For potential customers in the US looking to get the full blu ray box set-- Even with shipping, it's still about $50 cheaper to get it from amazon.co.uk instead of amazon.com. Not sure about the other variants.

Got the CD set from HMV this morning, I am enjoying what I have heard, I can't see this collection as a Live set at all, it is new recordings of all their albums, there is no crowd/audience noise at all.

I love the new interpretations, especially the likes of "The Hall Of Mirrors", "Antenna", "Spacelab", "Metropolis" and "Showroom Dummies", as I type this I am listening to the "Computer World" album in this set.

As has been mentioned in this thread already, the albums are very short with several tracks truncated but that hasn't spoilt my listening experience.

Excellent sound quality too.

I wanted to wait to hear some tracks before deciding what to buy from this massive release. So I just downloaded some of the audio tracks to audition, and have to say they are phenomenal. As WLR says, there is absolutely NO audience noise from start to finish of each track, so they essentially come across as brand new studio recordings of each album! Whether that is the case, or if they simply muted the audience track, I'm not sure. I wonder how the audio on the live blu-rays compare to the CD's/Digital Download versions? I'd like to think for the videos they'd mix in some of the audience for live ambiance - it did not detract at all from the "Minimum Maximum" recordings/video (in fact, as with any live show it makes you feel like your there), but I have to admit this is pretty sweet to have clean audio recordings of the new arrangements. Will definitely be picking up the 8CD set now.

Agree with you Fred, this is a fantastic set, it is basically all their albums re-recorded in superb audio quality, "Tour De France" isn't that much different to be fair, but the earlier albums have been re-recorded from the ground up, if only they had taken such care with the original "Catalogue" remasters in 2009, which were diabolical, this set, however, more than makes up for it. :D

my biggest issue with it is, that many of the songs, have been severely shortened.

i wish some had been a lot longer.

many are 50% of the length, especially autobahn, and many others.

I'm gonna get a whippin' for this comment but (and this is just my opinion) I think I've listened to the original "Autobahn" maybe twice in it's entirety since I first bought the album in 1985, mainly because I just get kind of bored with it after the first 10 minutes lol. Same, though to a lesser degree, with "Trans Europe Express/Metal On Metal/Abzug". As much I adore the band, I do have to admit some of their stuff does get a little repetitive for my taste so I don't mind the new abridged arrangements. Having said that I do agree with your point on a couple tracks. "Showroom Dummies" in particular would have been nice to have in a longer arrangement. "The Model" (one of my faves) would be nice to hear shaken up a bit for a switch - they've never messed much with that one as far as remixes/re-recordings or live versions. I do appreciate that "Computer Love" and "Pocket Calculator" are both a nice compromise between the original versions and the "The Mix" interpretations this time around. Interesting that "The Telephone Call" has none of the vocals. I know Karl Bartos did the vocals for that one but I'm pretty sure I saw a recent live performance on YouTube where Ralf sang it?? It's always been another favorite of mine, but I still enjoy this voxless version just fine anyway. In a perfect world, "It's More Fun To Compute" would be allowed to shine all on it's own once again - and I could go for a good 8 minutes of that one ;-)

BTW, I'm listening to the new "Autobahn" at the moment and am really liking it. It's held my attention pretty well through 14mins!

:D What is interesting about the CD set is you can create playlists, for example, of each of the Amsterdam Paradiso Catalogue shows, which I have done and enjoyed listening to the tracks pretty much as they were played in those shows, also, you can re-create the "Abridged Blu-Ray/DVD" show as well, of course you can also create a CD of your favourite tracks from the CD set, this is my "Special Edition CD":

01. Geiger Counter & Radioactivity
02. It's More Fun To Compute & Home Computer
03. Neon Lights
04. Showroom Dummies
05. Sex Object
06. Elektro Kardiogramm
07. The Model
08. Europe Endless
09. Antenna
10. Computer Love
11. The Hall Of Mirrors
12. The Robots
13. Aero Dynamik
14. Music Non Stop

With all these playlist ideas I think you definitely get value for money :D :D

I got the 8CD boxset in today's mail :-)

The packaging is indeed simplistic, but that has always been their style, visually. It's very sturdy and attractive.

I'm listening to the song "Autobahn" now as I begin the process of ripping the CD's into my computer library. After posting a while back that I often get bored listening to the original 23min version, I can say that 3-D version is, without question, my favorite rendition of the song!

Anyway, the CD's sound amazing, and I'm still loving the choice to eliminate any audience noise for these.

I also like that each song is given it's own distinct track on the CD's, unlike the digital download I sampled before buying which combined many tracks together as one.

Absolutely no regrets with this purchase.

Those songs are supposed to be segued together. I doubt anyone would listen to parts of those songs, without the complete song.
