Though " Not Necessarily New Wave", anyone that is old enough to remember back than, Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers were sometimes early on referred to by music journalist/press as "New Wave" mistakenly along with Cheap Trick back in the late 70's.
R.I.P. Tom Petty

To me, songs like "The Waiting" and "Refugee" sound somewhat like guitar-based New Wave. Those are my two favorite songs by Tom. RIP.

Not a fan, but did respect him as a talented artist and songwriter. The one song I do have in my collection is "Don't Come Around Here No More" which he did with Eurythmics' Dave Stewart. A coworker was playing it on her iPad the other day and all I heard from a distance was the rhythm track yet I instantly knew what it was. He also seemed to be a fairly humble guy as far as rock stars go, so while I was not a fan of the bulk of his music, I found him to be likeable as a person.
