Classix Nouveaux

Classix Nouveaux

Hi guys,

Cherry red is releasing Classix Nouveaux- Night People.

Classix Nouveaux
Night People
CDMRED 234
Classix Nouveaux were one of the leading lights of the new romantic scene from the early 1980’s. Formed from the ashes of the punk band X-Ray Spex, the band were fronted by the bald headed Sal Solo and they went on to enjoy success with 8 chart singles.

This album reached the top 50 on release in 1982 and has never been on CD before plus includes rare bonus tracks! This album has been in great demand from fans of the bands, both new and old, and we have great delight in re-issuing it on CD for the first time!
Classix Nouveaux’s contemporaries include Visage and Ultravox though the band’s own musical identity was built on harder guitar driven material rather than the synth based sound that was so common at the time.

Foreward / Guilty / Run Away / No Sympathy, No Violins / Inside Outside / 623 / Every Home Should have One / Tokyo / Or A Movie / Soldier / The Protector Of The Night / The Robot's Dance / Nasty Little Green Men / Test Tube Babies / Night People / Old World For Sale / 627 / We Don't Bite

Wow I can't believe this thread didn't do better. CN is almost universally regarded as the most talented and influential NW band ever. And they just issued a live CD in the River Sessions series!

Actually, Cherry Red released Night People on CD in 2003 with 7 bonus tracks. They are apparently re-releasing it again perhaps due to demand. It was released at the same time in 2003 along with La Verite which also included bonus tracks. They did not release Secrets at that time, so unless you have the Secrets CD from a while back, that one is the harder one to find these days. They all sound great, and include some extended mixes as well as bonus b-sides.

I'm rather embarrassed to admit that I've never actually heard this band. Seen their LPs, heard about them, but that's about it. Is "Night People" where I should start?

I would say "Guilty" is their most recognizable song, so yes.

Well, Classix Nouveaux was a relatively obscure band in recent years coz it was difficult to get their CD's. It's also the kind of bands U become interested in when U have an almost complete NW collection before going for the rarities. One night, a few years ago, in Klub 102, as I was left alone with the DJ, all the dudes had gone to sleep, I requested him to play rare stuff... He obliged, he played Masks: Under Two Flags and Classix Nouveaux among others. My attention was caught, I then convinced a friend to sell me his cherished Best Of... end of the story.

Regarding the question, where U should start?, I would agree that Night People is a good album with songs like Guilty, Run Away, Tokyo, Every Home Should Have One, Nasty Little Green Men, No Sympathy, No Violins etc
The Best Of, on the other hand features 6 tracks from La Vérité and 5 from Night People. It's a more dance oriented album with the new version of Guilty, the extended versions of Is It A Dream and Forever And A Day, the Single version of Inside Outside. In addition, it includes La Vérité, Never Again, I Will Return and The End.... Or The Beginning the Non-LP Single release.

Hope it helps....

I stand by what I said about CN.

It looks like Sal Solo has gone "Christian".

http://www.salsolo.com/

Per Sal's website: "We do hear that SECRET by CLASSIX NOUVEAUX and HEART & SOUL by SAL SOLO are to be released on CD in the UK sometime soon." YAY!!!!!!!!!!

"Pilgrimage - The Gospel Best of Sal Solo" (ACTS) Songs from all the above albums. Also includes a version of "San Damiano" (Heart and Soul)

I dont know if you can still get this cd? I found it here almost 7 years ago, but it's not listed anymore.

Night People is by far the bands best work. It's a heavy Goth/Wave album, and the bonus tracks are all in the same great style. Unfortunately, the second album, La Verite', is a dramatically different style. It's heavy on the dance beats and pretense, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. The album does have some great songs, but is definitely their least interesting album. The 1983 album Secret is a good middle ground. It still has some of the dance rhythms, but also returns to somewhat darker songs, such as Manitou and No Other Way.
Cherry Red records will be releasing Secret on CD in 2006. I've assisted with the track selection, though nothing has been finalized as of yet.

Anyone have an update on the reissues?

I did a search for Sals Heart & Soul & didn't find anything.

Been a CN fan since I first heard them on the comp LP "Spinning Pups". Bought everything I could over the years and believe I have a complete discography. Night People (retitled "Classix Nouveaux" in the States and replacing 2 songs with singles) is by far their best but I really like La Verite as well. Secret never did anything for me, it seems they bought a sampler and it all went downhill.

I've been able to get the Cherry Red reissue of La Verite and it sounds pretty good. Better than my beat to shit vinyl. I'll probably get Night People and Secret when they become available again just to have them.

At the risk of sounding like Jason Squared, "Night People" is still available from The Ideal Copy for $14.99.
