Children Of Nuggets:

Children Of Nuggets:

"Original Artyfacts from the Second Psychedelic Era - 1976-1995"

I'm not sure if this has been previously discussed, but Rhino is releasing a follow-up to the two Nuggets boxsets from a few years back this coming Tuesday - and it looks not half bad... how can you go wrong with 'Vanishing Girl' as an opening track?! I've pre-ordered mine from Amazon.ca for a measly $69.99 CDN - read on...

Much has been written about Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The First Psychedelic Era 1965-1968; the influential set of worthy one-offs from the psychedelic ‘60s inspired a pair of Rhino boxed sets – and was in many ways the model upon which our company was founded. So it should come as little surprise that the 1972 double-LP prompted scores of bands to mine the garage-psych vein. Now Rhino has surveyed the best of neo-garage, ’80s power pop, Paisley Underground psych and other Nuggets-influenced styles from around the world on Children Of Nuggets: Original Artyfacts From The Second Psychedelic Era 1976-1996.

With 100 selections, Children Of Nuggets features such standard-bearers as The Cramps, The Three O’Clock, The Dukes of Stratosphear (the alter-ego of XTC), The Rain Parade, Flamin’ Groovies, The Fleshtones, Lyres, The Hoodoo Gurus, The Chesterfield Kings, The Smithereens, and more. The collection also includes a deluxe 100-page book with tons of photos and essays by coproducers Alec Palao and Gary Stewart, Bucketfull of Brains’ Nigel Cross, and “Little Steven” Van Zandt of the popular Underground Garage radio show. This 4-CD boxed set is the missing link between the first garage rockers and the current garage revival...

I'll get this for the remastered sound but I have a few minor quibbles:

They could have picked some better Fleshtones songs,

Should have included: The Gravedigger V, Eyes of Mind, True West, Vertebrats, The Things, maybe a few more Swedish & Aussie bands

Laika & the Cosmonauts (aren't they a surf band?),

The Wondermints-never considered them "garage" or "psych"

Why two Plimsouls and Teenage Fanclub songs and only one Plasticland and Long Ryders?

[/quote]Well sort of...

If you think a talented Finnish band that plays instrumentals in the style of the classic 60s Cali Surf bands is ordinary fare. Personally, I think it's just offbeat enough to fit right in with other songs on this comp. [8D]

I'm sure I'll be picking this one up, there are enough songs that I don't have elsewhere to make it worthwhile. Does anybody have any feedback on the second volume of "Nuggets"? I think it was all British bands.

Yeah, myself I'll take the second box of Nuggets over the first (I always prefer UK Psych over the American version anytime), although it's not all British bands... the Netherlands, Japan and Canada are all represented (to name a few). It's a nice set, but if you're seriously interested in British Psychedelia pick up the two Rubble boxsets... if you can find them! Twenty discs in all and they are indispensible!!

Well it's been about three and a half weeks, but Amazon.ca came through and I'm listening to it now... if you've any interest in the neo-psych era I urge you to get it.

You won't be disappointed...
