Rega Turntable for Vinyl to MP3

Postby Jimbo » Tue Mar 07, 2006 9:58 pm

A couple of years ago I had a nice turntable and preamp that I stupidly sold and now I have to re-buy everything.

Well I took the first step and picked up one of the last of the Rega P-2s and that arrived a few days ago. A Rega P2 is some design lesson in simplicity. Box stock these things are nice turntables, but with a few tweaks, this thing can sound better than some turntables costing over a grand.

My next victim will be the stock Rega RB-250 tonearm. Sure they are nice enough straight from the factory, but with a little help from Origin Live with their structural mods, and a Cardas internal & external rewire job, they get even better.

If you have been siting on the fence for a while and you want a nice new turntable for as cheep as you will ever see them (in this class anyways), here is the link.

That's quite a setup Jimbo. I've been looking at Rega's lineup for a while now, and would dearly love to get a p7, but in reality that will probably turn into a p5. I like the mods done to the rb250/300 arm...sounds like the tweaks bring it in line with what you would get on the p5/p7 (rb700). All in all, I've read overwhelmingly good reviews about the Rega line, and there are no shortage of mods that one can perform. Have a look at eBay sometime, there are a number of vendors with mod kits for the p2/p3 line.

I'm sure you'll be pleased with the turntable.

I used to own a P3, so I have no doubt I'll be moving and grooving with this thing.

You are right about the amount of upgrades out there. Rega hates them, and SOME of them I think may be "snake oil", but with some EVERYONE who has tried them says it makes a huge difference (structural mods and the internal/external rewire).

Really, I think you could BUILD a Rega P3 just out of upgrade parts. [:0] [^]

Sheah. You guys still don't have the Googlephonic Stereo yet? With the greatest number of speakers before infinity and the moon rock needle?

That would be what we call snake oil Blir.
Right now the trend is toward simplicity and minimalism.

Now I've got that shopping urge again.

If I save my pennies I could see myself with this:

At a mere 112K for one (incl. arm and table), my TT envy will finally be a thing of the past.

Yeah, I know what you mean. I bought my Dual around 1992 (not in the same class) but I love the minimalism of it, and especially the wood base.

The Dual Golden Stone is a gas too [:D]

I picked up a NAD PP-2 Phono Preamplifier today. One more thing out of the way.

Probably one of the only bargains left in the audio world today.
