Storing vinyl

Postby chwbka » Wed Nov 01, 2006 12:43 am

Just curious how you all keep you vinyl, I have mine in wood crates in my house I bought from tower records ages ago, but now I'm thinking of using something else. I have a couple thousand records and wanted to have them stored in something a little nicer. Any suggestions from my fellow vinyl nerds?

I used to store mine in those stackable plastic milk crates, in poly sleeves. This was in a basement room, below the kitchen. One day, dishwasher decides to clog and overflow. Next thing I know, all vinyl between artists H and M or so is water-damaged. I had them protected in poly sleeves, but the water, as it always seems to, got in anyway.

My point, probably obvious, is this: whether it is on a shelf, in a cabinet, in a crate, poly sleeves or no, whatever, think about what they might be exposed to: are they likely to get any direct sunlight? Are there water pipes nearby? Are they off the floor? Is the room particularly humid? Can pets get near them? etc. I realize you've probably considered this, but given my experience, I'd like to move away from shelving (my current method) to enclosed cabinets. I thought mine were safe as could be but apparently not. Hopefully hearing my experience can save someone else's collection.

Those Boltz ones are nice. But what do you expect for $$$.

Say, does anyone know where you can get the same type of polysleeves for DVDs? I'm amazed that they're not more common, given that there's lots of custom packages or cardboard slipcases. Then, there's always those horrible Warner snap packs.
