Record Storage

Postby Ollie Stench » Wed Nov 29, 2006 2:59 am

I need a new record shelf. I had a friend build me one a few years ago and it is now full. He told me about a shelf Ikea has (expidite?). Anyone know what he is talking about? He says the Ikea shelf is cheaper than he could build one for.

Any other ideas as to shelving/storage?

I just searched the Ikea website for Expedite and it came back "no hits". Could be a discontinued item. I hope somebody knows something about it because I'm trying to solve the same storage issues you are. What a headache! Anyway, this is what I've found in my searches:

Boltz shelves - http://www.boltz.com/showitems.asp?deptcode1=502

or you could go with this (I've bought guitar stuff from these guys and they're great to deal with):

or have this guy throw something together:

Good luck.

Thanks Coop!

Is that thing really sturdy enough for records? Even bolted to the wall, the 29 lbs./shelf load limit scares me.

I was going to order a couple of the small ones online and check it out but the shipping was more than the two shelves so I think I'll go get them next week and let you know!

Sweet. I hope they work out. I'm already counting on shipping being a killer if I end up getting them (there aren't many Ikea's in Vermont [:(]).

Yeah, but the Ikea in Burbank, California was playing all the great New Wave hits the last time I was in their: U2, The Thompson Twins, Altered Images, The Talking Heads, ABC, EATB, et al. [:D] (Not kidding either!)

That Ikea one looks kind of flimsy, but for the price it might be worth looking into. I guess I could always use it for books or something else... my smurf hummel collection maybe.

Those other ones are way too out of my price range to even consider, but its nice to know what is out there.

ok, bought two of the Ikea Expedit a few weeks back, put one together tonight, would have been easier with two people, I did it by myself and as inept as I am it took me about 40 minutes and 7 or 8 cuss words.

I would estimate one shelf will hold about 650-700 LP's comfortably, way more sturdy than I anticipated, these babies will have no trouble in my estimation holding the Lp's and you can stand them up or on their side. Recommended!

Any chance of the shelves sagging Coop? I've bought a couple of things from Ikea, and the shelves seem to be too lightweight for a load of lp's. I'd hate to come home one day and see them spilled all over the floor.

In my estimation there is no way these things sag. I sat on them (seriously) without a problem. I put the second one together in about 20 minutes by the way. The 4 exterior shelves, although lightweight, are two inches thick. These aren't your particle board type shelves. The internal structure is 3/4" shelves. I'm quite surprised at how good these turned out. They seem to be very sturdy.

An added bonus, my niece was going to IKEA so she picked them up for me, keeping my vow to never enter IKEA in tact.

I bought one of the ikea shelves yesterday. It took me about an hour to put it together by myself. The hardest part was squaring everything up to fit the last pieces together. I have yet to load it up but it looks like it should be fairly sturdy. At least now I can get those 200+ albums off the floor, and I now have a place to put my boxes of 7" records.

I've had mine loaded for a week now, they are awesome and I'm pretty certain sagging won't be an issue.

I used to have plans for a shelving unit made out of PVC pipe that I found on the net. It looked very sturdy and was pretty inexpensive. I'll look around for it again and post the link here.
