Vinyl Collecting Strategies

One of my greatest frustrations with vinyl shopping is finding something that looks like a great find, then wondering: is it available on cd? has it been remastered/re-released? is it worth the sale price? is it a bootleg? if so, what is the quality? I realize a vinyl purist doesn't care if it's a cd release or not.

I've always maintained a "to get" list of some sort. Lately I've tried to cull out the material I want that is only available on vinyl or that is prohibitively expensive on cd. I keep the list on a PDA I carry so if I find myself in a vinyl store spontaneously I'll know what I'm looking for. So, my buying approach is to search for all those bands in my list, first and foremost. If I can't find any of them I usually go home empty-handed. This "planned" approach to collecting is limiting that way and can be frustrating. Some stores have terminals to access AMG - but most do not.

I'm curious what other vinyl collectors do - are you proactive and deliberate in what you search for or are you more spontaneous and risk-taking? Do you prefer retail stores or Ebay? How do you make sure you're getting something worthwhile? Do you keep lists or do you go by memory?

Good song. The sibilance is obvious. Granted, that can be caused by a few things. Groove wear. A bad pressing. Robin Geoffrey Cable being the producer.

Relevant to nothing, but why does erSucsbo put "OBSCURE" and 12,000 exclamation points in the title of every single auction? All you need are a few "lols" and 50,000 commas and you've got a highly-esteemed NWO member. I just realized this is the guy who listed an AOR album as "MINIMAL SYNTH!!!" Nuff said.

Glad I'm not the only one to hear it. I'm guessing if it were a pressing problem it would be more pronounced and consistent, instead of being selected spots of sibilance.

Again, relevant to nothing, but this guy tried to peddle some record by a group or person by the name of Pure Form. The copy he had on auction had an asking price of $911.11: one of only 2 copies known to exist. There were no takers (during the auction anyway). He e-mailed me to see if we could work out a deal...I said I'd have to hear it before I could part with that kind of coin. It's worth the $11.11 of the asking price, no more.

As my little way of gettin' even, I'm posting the song here. Maybe it will help drive down the price if he hasn't unloaded it yet.
