sorryfor posting a follow-up to my own thread, but..

I notice that vinyl albums now (sometimes) cost more than cds!! e.g. Bjork's upcoming release (?Volta?), the vinyl album cost 1 euro more than the corresponding cd.

that's funny, I noticed they are more expensive than CD's as well. I never buy vinyl of new releases, I'd be interested to hear from someone here who does as far as quality, sound, etc.

I'll buy a new release on vinyl every now and then. The quality sounds about the same to me as it always did - - no better, no worse - - of course, I'm not TOO fussy about pristine sound quality.

It depends on the release as far as pricing vs. CD. I picked up recent stuff by the Shins, Hot Hot Heat, Arcade Fire in the $10 to $12 range. However, other releases have been in the $25 range.

I have no idea for the rhyme-or-reason behind it.

I don't know if vinyl can save the industry but I guess if it's marketed the right way...who knows? But I have to say, I've heard some vinyl to digital transfers that sound really, really magnificent. Again, these are done by some real major audiophiles who have the passion to do it. Vinyl can sound incredible.

Must just be me...I can see the convenience of a CD and I do have some, but I've heard very few that sound as good as their vinyl counterpart, assuming the vinyl is in mint or mint- condition.

Ahhh yes, the never humorous musings of Bill Mahar, the poor mans Dennis Miller. Bill obviously shopped for his vinyl at K-Mart, and probably bought his "record player" there as well. Another topic he knows shit about...could the Guiness Book people be paying him a visit soon?

I've been eyeing some of the newer 180 g vinyl - just noticed Wire's first album, among others, has been re-released on 180 g. Supposedly the added weight can add stability and ensure consistent speed on the turntable. But, some of the pressings are apparently from the same tooling as the original, lighter vinyl. Anyone have an opinion on the heavier stuff?

I still buy alot of new vinyl, most of it in the punk/HC vein. Unless there's a separate mix/mastering for vinyl and cd there isn't any better quality on the vinyl, and in fact it can sound worse. For example, if XXX Record Label sends out the new "Joe Blow" album to be pressed up on cd and vinyl, and they only send out the album on 1 cd-r or DAT and that same mix is used for both CD and vinyl, the vinyl is gonna sound like crap.

I usually take the new vinyl I buy and burn it to a cd right away. I EQ, compress, clean up and otherwise tweak the wav files before committing them to cd-r, so I can make it sound however I want.

My oh my, someone is very sensitive about Bill Maher. I didn't know which was funnier, the post of the New Rule or the slam on Bill Maher. God I love him. I watch his show religiously... he is the only thing that helps me deal with these interesting times. Yikes. Oh yeah, vinyl rules.

I hold onto a couple of crates on vinyl more for the look of the lps than the sound, but I do have a couple of those heavy vinyl Mobile Fidelity Sound Lab Records (REM's Murmer and Reckoning, U2's Unforgettable Fire). I've never opened them, but am curious if anyone has done an A/B comparison with the standard lps of same?

P.S. I'm with eight6 on the Bill Mahar thing. I don't think his wit backs up his inflated view of himself. Gimme Conan...
