Great cataloging tool

Someone (Blir? 8-6?) lead me to this site www.rateyourmusic.com about a year ago --- it is an amazing way to catalog your collection, and highly addictive. It's a little cumbersome to figure out at first, but it has been a lot of fun to get an online visualization of my music collection...

...it also may be useful in an insurance situation should your collection suffer a catastrophe![:D]

....this is my collection (so far -- I still need to catalog about 300 more items)

I have yet to get into this site, but I looked at your lists.

Fill me in on Riot 303. I've never heard of them.

Riot 303 was a Canadian (Calgary) punk band circa 80-82(?) with a very west coast sound (Black Flag/Circle Jerks)....the 7" they put out is extreeemly rare...and I wish I could find it...I asked our local punk superstore (Taang! Records: a waaaay overpriced record shop with an amazing collection of rare punk 7"...example; Black Flag "Fix Me" 7" $150) The guy told me the Riot 303 would go for about $200, that is if you could even locate one....here is a (blog) site with more info on Riot 303....

^^^^Visually not as exciting, less user friendly, more impersonal. seems antiquated

they do have great information if you want to know where a record was recorded or who played the flugel horn.

Not as full of ads, banners, and other crap, either.

I'll take the info at discogs.com over the fluff of rateyourmusic.com. Mind you, discogs is for pure info, whereas rateyourmusic looks to be more of a social networking site. I don't see an option at rateyourmusic where you can dump a list of your collection to a file.

ohh OBS.....

Yes, I am noticing the EBAY ads on some of the artis pages on RYM. ...seems WAY less intrusive than the ads than on Discogs.com. (for example... just clicked on 'Backstreet Boys' and the whole right side of the page was ebay ads. the top had a 'guess your age banner')....Joe Fatone played flugel horn on the second record.

and yes you are correct.

...there is not an option to "dump a list of your collection to a file".

I guess it aint for you. but I think you would like it if you started using it.

I forgot that if you don't have an account at discogs.com, you see ads. There's none if you log-in.

not so for RYM unfortunately. It does seem to me discogs.com is more thorough as a rule, albiet a little dry.....Discogs.com really has a good handle for obscure remixes and 12"s (DJ shit yknow)...I guess what I like best about RYM (and the reason I joined) is that it neatly catalogs my collection in a pleasing visual way. as well as doing the same for lists and my reviews....I swear you would love it...
