I've always wondered why U.S. 7" have a large hole, and I need to install a big circle on my spindle, and the Import 7"-ers have a single spindle hole? Don't need no stinkin' adapter... [:p]

Those import 45's also have what looks like the cut-out etched on the record of where the big-hole should go....as if the record buyer might choose to punch out the bigger hole. I never really understood that either!

Neat article on the first 7". I bought plenty of 45's back in the 70's / 80's but would've never considered stacking them the way my mom would've back in the 50's. In fact, she threw out every 45-sleeve she ever had, as if they were part of the disposable packaging.

I was surprised to see that many 78s were also issued in various colors, as well as the odd multicolored disc. I would have thought that to be a more recent development.

Digging for a little more info, I came upon this in The Guardian. RCA's original categorizing strategy was...

"The two formats, singles and four-track EPs, were colour-coded - green vinyl for country and polka, red for classical, yellow for children's, blue for international, cerise for rhythm'n'blues."

Later on, "pop" came in black, but the coding was shortly after abandoned. Who knew.

my 7" collection is at an aenimic 800 count.

and although the quality is far less than its younger brother the 12" (single, that is) you can still find some pretty interesting edits and b sides the 12" may not have....

I say Happy Birthday 7"

I remember hearing that vinyl has to be colored because in it's natural, virgin state all records would be clear. Though coloring them black is the norm it would not be a big deal to color then differently.

I purchased a record of a news broadcast from 1950 the other day and it was red (and 33.33 RPM).

we pressed one of our 7"s @ 45 RPM on one side and 33RPM to fit two (short songs) on the B side ---- the b side sounds terrible the smaller the groove space the worse the sound ---that's for sure
