If you can hook it into a mp3 player and can find a suitible spot in a record store you could use it to sample possible buys.

OMG sound burger! I've heard about that thing before. This thing looks sweet but do you HAVE to have a computer to use it?

All you need is good imagination to use it (ie. the product doesn't actually exist).
Incidentally... besides the aforementioned AT Sound Burger/ Mr. Disc, Sony made this little gem (Linear Tracking & Direct Drive no less!) around the same time back in 1983.

I remember it being featured in the new product section of Pop Sci back in the day [;)]

I had a PS-F5 that gave me about 20 years of good use. I still have it but it's not working. One of these days I should work on figuring out how to fix it. Great turntable for what it was!
Seriously though, for all those years was it your regular play TT or a backup?
How was the wow, flutter & overall playback quality on your particular unit?
Did the styli/cartridges wear through themselves & vinyl the same way as a conventional TT?
Jez curious..[8)]

It was my primary turntable for about 20 years, believe it or not. I ripped a lot of vinyl on it around 1996 or so and then didn't come back to re-ripping vinyl until about 5 years ago when I picked up a decent Stanton.

the sound quality, wow, flutter, etc. was just fine. Of course, the disc had to be warp-free. I mean, it wasn't high-end sound, but it was perfectly acceptable for the price.

I bought it originally as a dorm record player and it held up well. I got it out a few years ago and it didn't want to work, and I haven't come back to figure out what went wrong.

If it come across any of the old rips in some back alley of my hard drives I'll post one so you can hear it.

still, it is a great unit.

Just goes to show how innovative and well made Sony products were back then.
