http://balder.prohosting.com/funkydud/page11.html <------- play list!

There was a TV show in Australia called COUNTDOWN that aired between 1974 to 1987. The show's legacy is so important that it has become a big part of Australian culture (not that it was the best Aussie TV show at the time). However, every January episodes of COUNTDOWN gets replayed for the entire month on a show called RAGE (all night music program). I have managed to catch a few shows whilst in Australia and it is quite fascinating.

I managed to find this website that lists many of the programs that aired and reading through the play list, I found a great deal of NEW WAVE video clips listed - included XTC, Blondie, Japan, Cars and even more obscure acts from Canada and Europe!

CountDown was also the first non-European program to launch ABBA. Japan had their first hit 'Don't Rain On My Parade' in Australia due to being aired on CountDown. Blondie scored their first hit 'In The Flesh' in Australia due to the push of COUNTDOWN (remember, Blondie didn't officially chart in UK or US before 1978 and In The Flesh was 1977).

Other stupid little facts I know: Host Ian 'Molly' Meldrum persuaded Billy Idol to release 'Hot In the City' as a single. Molly punched Johnny Rotten after he flicked a lighten cigarette at the camera man. Bon Scott of AC/DC appeared in a school uniform in 1975 on COUNTDOWN.

http://balder.prohosting.com/funkydud/page11.html <------- go here for a list of the existing shows and go to the late 70s, early 80s section for the New Wave entries!

You can explore more of this site, since it is fascinating piece of Rock history... cheers!

Yes, RAGE is a fabulous program... but not just for Countdown. Every Saturday night they have guest programmers who choose the playlist. Tonight they are playing some Devo, Sex pistols and the Go-Go's. Best I've ever seen was a couple of weeks ago when th
