Ahh...thats what I needed-
I couldnt figure out what I needed to listen to this morning. Disco, New Wave, Indie, Punk, Italo, Funk, and Ambient/Downtempo werent cutting it.

Thats really great. Produced by Trevor Horn (From the Buggles! and Frankie Goes to Hollywood) The album was 90125 the record company catalogue number. I used to know the name of the computer used to do the cover..I remember it had a whoping 64KB of RAM.

I'd also like to mention that I seriously love Saga. I have hoardes of their CDs. I mention them here from time to time (when Im not posting about useless bs). They are prog and new wave to me because of their extensive use of synthesizers. They had 2 keyboardists...and while they sold out at the end of the 1980s, I think that while their material produced was bad 'Saga material' but still 'damn good music'. But that is a later argument.

Saga were one of my favorite bands of the '80s, but only during the Portrait Records years (which is when they really sold out). "Heads or Tales" alone has 5 classic tracks on it ("The Flyer," "Scratching the Surface," "The Writing," "Cat Walk," "Pitchman").

Doesn't classify as rock, new wave or prog, but "What Do I Know" was my favorite single of 1985. In more deserving hands, it would have been huge. In Portrait's... well, it flopped. Their loss.

I LOVE the Flyer.

That was the only one song by Saga to really make the hot 100 in the US charts.

They had 3 Hot 100 hits...

On the Loose - #26 (entered December 24, 1982, 18 weeks)
Wind Him Up - #64 (entered April 2, 1983, 8 weeks)
The Flyer - #79 (entered November 26, 1983, 3 weeks)

A couple other singles made some other Billboard charts. Like, mainstream rock. They SHOULD have had a lot more, but I think Portrait was pretty much done with them after "Wind Him Up." And Atlantic was never there for them in the first place.

Along the same lines as Saga was Gamma, a Ronnie Montrose creation. I really only got in to Gamma 3 which has some absolute classic synth/rock songs: Modern girl, What's gone is gone, Moving violation, Condition yellow. I always considered the triumvirate of early 80s synth/rock to be Saga, Gamma and Red Rider.

But how do you choose just one tune to represent a decade? With Ozzy, Motley Crue, early-80's VH, Queensryche, Whitesnake and G&R to choose from? Hell, even Ratt and Dokken had their moments in the 80's. And what about one-timers like Y&T's "Summertime Girls" or TnT's "10,000 Lovers"? And even though I hate Twisted Sister, "The Price" is a great song! Nope... can't pick just one. But I can burn ya a kick-ass 80's rock disc! [8D]

I started listing songs and then I realized they were all from the 70's (as per the previous note about 1979's "Damn the Torpedos,") but I have to acknowledge a lingering fondness for Billy Squier's "Don't Say No" LP, especially "In The Dark," "My Kind of Lover," and "Lonely is the Night."

Any album that doesn't have "God Blessed Video" on it is great by comparison.

A childhood buddy of mine had Alcatrazz's first album and made one mix tape after another with "Island in the Sun" on it. That song, too, was insufferable.

Most Rocshire artists died a deserved death after the IRS shut down the label and threw whatshisface and his wife in jail. But not Alcatrazz! They kept going and going and going...
