you ever heard new wave being played?

I was in a bakery today to escape the heat and grab a muffin.

As I was sitting at a table I realized Depeche Mode was playing on the speaker's (ironically it was Just Can't Get Enough). Next came The Cure, Blondie and a bunch of other strictly New Wave hits. A pleasant surprise but I did feel old. What's next the elevator?

I had to dig this topic out because for the past year, every time I go to A.C. Moore they're playing new wave, and not just big 80's hits. It's not that they're playing anything obscure, but not the typical flashback vh1 radio stuff either. I heard Lene Lovich Lucky Number last week & it struck me as so odd - I was probably the youngest person there, and obviously not the crafty housewife type. I didn't know that crew would dig Lene.

I wonder if every store has the same music, or if it's up to the store manager. I'll have to check them out next time I'm there & see if they look like an old waver....

Ooh, you know, I've heard "Whisper To A Scream" by Icicle Works, Joboxers' "Just Got Lucky", "Your Own Private Idaho" by the B52s, and a number of other '80s NW songs while shopping at two - three separate areawide grocery store chain locations. They always play either '80s NW or really old oldies from the '50s and very early '60s, it seems.

Edit: Today (the 18th) I had to visit the hospital because of complications from a recent surgery and in the ward I stayed/waited in the longest, there was some '80s radio station being piped in with all kinds of great '80s NW songs, including "Walking In L.A." by Missing Persons and The Fixx's "Sign Of Fire", though those are merely representative of what was playing and not the whole of the great '80s grooves I heard. It made it bearable that I was sitting there in that waiting room for four hours in unbelievable pain, though I was in no mood to sing along at the time.

Well, today I was watching TV and I go by Discovery's Animal Channel and stop because there were some really nice images of jellyfish and insects. Turns out that the background music for that was The Cure's "Lullaby". I was very much surprised and if think that the choice of song was perfect for the ad promoting the channel. [:D]

Dee, you're in Texas, right? Do you shop at HEB? That sounds like what my local HEB plays. Hope you're feeling better.

*dingdingding* You are so right on re: the grocery store chain being HEB. Which is way cool, and thanks for the get well message; I'm on my way.

It's bizarre enough to mention.... hearing Bernard Sumner's unmistakable voice singing "J - E - T..." etc., piped in overhead while I was shopping at the local Staples yesterday. I was so elated, I actually bought somsething.

This, especially since "Jetstream"-- or any other track from Waiting for the Sirens' Call for that matter-- got absolutely zero commercial radio play here in the Long Island/NYC (as far as I know) when it was originally released.

Eating at The HomeTown Buffet... loads of crap playing, then "Cruel to be Kind" by Nick Lowe, and then more continuous load of crap playing... I was even reminded of some of the lyrics Blir posted in another thread.

I heard "She Talks in Stereo" by Gary Myrick at Taco Time. I don't even remember hearing that one on the radio back in the day. This was followed by more new wavish but mainstream stuff like The Eurythmics.

Last Thursday before leaving town for Vegas scooter run I'm out doing errands, and decide on a burrito from Chipotle...they are playing salsa, Spanish/Mexican music, etc., when The Clash's The Magnificent Seven just blows over the speakers, it's loud in there, I rock out to eating my burrito, and then back to their upbeat Latin tunes, it was quite a departure, but most welcomed!!! Clearly they must have not realized that it wasn't about Mexican peasants hiring mercenaries to protect their village from oppression but rather about the oppression that the dehumanizing machinations of a pervasive capitalist market imposes on us every day. And there in a fast-food joint no less! Hahahahah...I hope you went to the counter to inform them of this cruel irony!

LOL! [:D] No, I didn't do that, next time I'll free those peasant slave-wage workers behind the counter.

I was actually singing/rapping along to the lyrics a little to loud, and wearing my 12-hole Docs (with red laces, of course!), that I freaked the guy right behind me out (and maybe a few others!) because when I got up to get more ice tea everyone was staring at me! Wish I could have seen their reaction while I was singing aloud, as I had my back to them while sitting on a stool looking out the window, oh well...

Just came back from shopping at Dollar Tree (nothing over $1.00), and they were playing Elvis Costello & The Attractions: "Pump It Up!" The lady behind the checkout was bobbing to the beat and she was at least 15 years older than me/I. Sweet to hear it blast over their sound system! [:)]

Had dinner with my sister at a "Wingnuts" Sunday night...

When we walked in to be seated a guy gave me a thumbs up because I was wearing my English beat t-shirt... then I heard the tunes, well it's a broad mix of stuff, but the new wave was cool to hear.

Safety Dance - MWH
Whip It - Devo
Cruel to be Kind - Dave Edmonds
Look of Love - ABC
Heart of Glass - Blondie
I Confess - the English beat
Lies - The Thompson Twins

Too bad there was so much crap played between the songs. As a national chain I'm wondering if they all have the same music tapes piped in, or it's a SoCal thing???

Anyone else visit a "Wingnuts?"

We took the kids shoe shopping at a Payless Shoes Friday evening and The Cure's Close to Me was playing - I was shocked! The music there is never any good.
