Wormster, I'd be interested in your thoughts on how KROQ compares to WLIR and why you like KROQ so much.

Hey Rogger,I always wondered if Wlir had a "sister" station somewhere on the west coast and after listening to some of the Kroq tapes i can say that krog seemed to be a little more relaxed and laid back. The music is a little more edgy and more non-domestic...Of course I am only getting a sample of music from these uploads..I could be off.Wlir was great. It had a sound like no other local station had.I loved when they would throw in some comedy skit or an exert sound clip from different movies/tv shows..Wlir music was always different than every other station, they did tend to overplay some of the more Popular New wave /alternative songs though.. I was in California in the late 80's. I loved being out there. I wished i would have experience the New wave experience out there with the surf and sun and music ect...

Wormster, I enjoyed your hearing your perspective on KROQ from someone who grew up with WLIR. I've enjoyed the WLIR recordings you have shared with us.
I have always wondered how the "Rock of the 80's" format would have fared on a full power big budget station in New York.
As a small suburban station with a weak signal Wlir made a brilliant choice in choosing new wave as a format. From what I have heard WLIR was difficult to tune in if you were more than a few miles from the transmitter.
You would have to have something unique and special to get people to listen and WLIR certainly had that.
Hey, How about another dose of KROQ from September 26th, 1986.

Was the success of WLIR and their music format, due to the MTV generation or was it because it was broadcast on Long Island and it had a reach beyond NYC?.WLIR signal reached NYC, lower NY and some of Conn.and of course Long Island.I myself was tired of the classic rock, and the hairbands and heavy metal.New wave and alternative rock filled in nicely for me.Mtv was big with new wave and Alternative, Also their was a UHF station that was big with new music, i dont remember the name of it.Colleges in NY were big also with new music.I guess, all those things i mentioned was the reason why WLIR, and its brilliant DJs were such a big hit. Also the great bands and music that came out of that era.

Roqqer! Glad to see that you've been keeping up on the KROQ posts and uploads. Nice to also see that you started using 4share to put everything you've made available all in one place. Something is missing from that 4share list, though. On September 1 of last year, you shared a September 1, 1986 recording (original zshare link: http://www.zshare.net/audio/18037082a7ff4ac9/), but that does not show up on 4share. You've got the September 1985 one up there (and a later ones from 9/14/84 and 9/26/86, which I don't believe you made available on zshare), but that 9/1/86 isn't there. Just wanted to let you know.

I show the April 29, 1987 recording as the last one you shared on zshare. Does that sound right? Everything past that has been made available only from 4share, correct?

OK, Roqqer, I've done a lot more reconciling of all the KROQ you've made available. I've built lists of everything you've posted here to NWO, links to what was shared off of zshare, and new links to what is now shared off of 4shared. Aside from the 9/1/08 posting of the 9/1/86 show (which I mentioned in previous post, and which doesn't show up on 4shared), I also show these previous NWO postings from you providing zshare links for shows which also do not show up on 4shared now:

Air Date Given: 1986
Posted: 10/14/2008 to NWO
Original Share: http://www.zshare.net/audio/20566014a125acf5/
Current Share: ??

Air Date Given: November 29, 1984
Posted: 11/14/2008 to NWO
Original Share: http://www.zshare.net/audio/51346401a6ae4700/
Current Share: ??

Air Date Given: Summer, 1984
Posted: 11/22/2008 to NWO
Original Share: http://www.zshare.net/audio/51720357bfcfa6c9/
Current Share: ??

Hope this is helpful.

I've caught myself up on everything that you have made available, and will enjoy the rest of the weekend listening to it all!

Thank You Skygeex for all the research that you performed. I added the 9-1-1986 and 1986 recordings to the 4share listing. The 11-29-1984 file was too large for 4share so I did another Zshare for those who missed it the first time.

http://www.zshare.net/audio/58858168e722d0df/

The summer of 1984 recording was really poor quality and I didn't save it on my computer. It was basically just me recording various songs from KROQ that summer with very little if any of the air personalities. I'm sorry I posted it.
Also, I added a new recording from August 19th, 1985 in appreciation of your interest in these old recordings.

hey all, I am really liking these vintage KROQ tapes. I never would have thought someone would have this stuff on tape still.

By any chance, does anybody here have some vintage Loveline recordings with Dr. Drew and the Poorman? I would love to hear some old Loveline episodes from back before it was syndicated.
