Rogger, this is great stuff. How I wish this could be the radio stations when you turn it on now. Licorice Pizza, wow, if only there were still places like that around. Hey Rogger, if you have more of these, please keep posting. Does anyone have any recordings of the Dusty Street, Raymondo and the Blade, Freddie Snakeskin, or even Elvira?

It's a shame KROQ has become the SHIT station it is today, and not the good station of yesterday. I know times change and all, but they're so shitty nowadays, when i lived in L.A. for 2 years, I didn't listen to their station at all, why? just shitty song after shitty song, after shitty song. Plus, I grew frsutrated with them, as they'd claim to be "big fans" of all our favorite groups, yet, the ONLY time you and I would hear anything from our favorite decade, is during their lunch hour. But hey, they have the latest Sum 41 song coming right up for us.(rollseys)

My guess is...they dont have a 3rd of the listners they used to have? Most people in L.A. think of their station(at least as of NOW), as a joke. I know alot of my friends do.

Couldn't agree more, DJ P. KROQ is rubbish these days. Sadly, though, their Arbitron ratings are probably a lot higher than they used to be. They were 7th in the most recent ranking (behind only KIIS and KOST for English-language music) and were 5th last summer. For every NWO fan they alienate, they seem to grab two more who can't get enough Sublime and Offspring (KROQ: Your Sublime And Offspring Headquarters!).

To me the shark-jump moment was in the early 90's when they announced they were going to start playing Bums 'n' Posers (wasn't that the name of Slash/Axl's band? Something like that?). Their rationale was "we're a rock station, they're a rock band, our fans want to hear them." Even that didn't fly so well, though they still play Metallica fairly regularly. When I think new wave and alternative legends, the first thing that pops into my mind is ... Metallica?

Thank God for satellite radio. Fred rocks.

I wish I had recorded the 'ROQ back in the day, sadly I never taped any of the air time... I'm guessing I was content with owning the records, and never bothered to record the shows, I just listed for hours on end. [:(]

Thanks so much Rogger. I am at work now and can't wait to get home to hear this.

It was so sad when I turned on the radio and KIIS FM and KBIG FM played more New Wave than KROQ did.

Man, the memories. Mostly Music Market and Middle Earth for me. We'd also get out to Pier Records on Balboa quite a lot. It had the benefit of having a pretty good head shop as well! I think that was Pier...or maybe it was another store just down the sidewalk...the memories are fading. I know I definitely perused Moby Disc and Goat Hill Records too. I can't remember if the latter was right by the Goat Hill Tavern in Costa Mesa...quite a few brain cells lost in that spot.

I forgot about Music Market. That place was amazing. I found both copies of my Hardest Hits Vol. 1 there. All of those kids that are growing up today in the mp3/ipod world are really missing out. I just really miss going to record store and heading to the "New Wave" or "12 inch" section. I remember trying to buy bands that just look New Wave. That's how I got to know Alphaville. I went into the store and saw the cover for "Big In Japan" and bought it because of the cover. Glad I did.
