MTV 120 Minutes

New Wave/Punk music, culture, genres, memories. '80s revivalism and other relevant topics.

I watched 120 Minutes almost every week but I really loved the show that existed a couple of years prior to 120 Minutes, The Cutting Edge. It was shown once a month and usually hosted by the Fleshtones, Peter Zremba. Since it was sponsored by IRS records, it catered to bands on that label. But they covered everybody, from the Minutemen to poetry reading from Lydia Lunch. A big influence on my listening habits.

It also warms my heart to see Night Flight get mentioned. When that show first began it would run from midnight to 6 AM every Saturday! I distinctly remember them showing plenty of cult movies and off-beat music videos from Some Bizzare.

I remember the show called 120 Minutes only in the early 90’s as it was presented by Paul King. I didn’t watch the show then because I had other interests in music, but it was certainly better than the Alternative Nation today. Even MTV was better in the early 90’s.Although it was low- budget, there were better shows, and better MTV presenters, and the music was different. Just remember Ray Cokes, Pip Dann, Paul King and their great shows.

MTV's 120 Minutes was the best 120 minutes of MTV for the entire week. Except for the once in blue moon ALTV shows. These were the highlights of my mtv youth.

"Post Modern MTV" was a M-F weeknight 1/2 hour show; it generally showed the more famous 120 Minutes bands, as well as some Adult Alternative stuff that didn't quite fit on 120 or the regular playlist (like 10000 Manics, fer instance).

I grew up without MTV, so a friend of mine would bring over tapes of 120 Minutes. We watched the Kevin Seal era (I liked him better than Dave Kendall, but Dave was alright).

I remember Andy Partridge on 120 Minutes. He was in Central Park, I think, with Dave Kendall, and they were looking at old Civil War figures or something in some antique shop. I remember this because I never forgot his quick wit during the whole interview. He talked about his famous dislike for touring and said something like, "If you buy my record, you have a slice of my soul. Why would you want to see the whole pork wobbling before you on stage?"

Ahh...gotcha. So back to 120 Minutes, was I the only one who got nauseated at the sight of Matt Pinhead when he hosted?

No He annoyed me to no end, wasn't he on Headbangers Ball? Plus his emphysema sounding voice got on my nevers by 20 mins. :)

I think he was. The biggest thing that annoyed me was that he always tried too hard, if you know what I mean. He never let a moment slip to show everyone how extensive his knowledge was of the indie/New Rock scene.

I had quite a few tapes of 120 Minutes from 88 and 89. I had my parents tape the show and send it to Korea. The Armed Forces Television Network didn't quite fulfill my needs.[:)]
