I think that The Vapors, though short lived, need to be mentioned. Politically minded and strong musically. I'm also a big fan of Maurice and The Cliches.

Those are the big four of which most modern music owes a debt to...add Lou Reed to make it a big-5.

Is your question about personal preference or who we think are truly the big 4?
In terms of importance, although it's still a subjective list I think it should be a combo of bands that stretch the full span of time from 1976 to end of new wave.
Blondie
Talking Heads
Depeche Mode
The Cure

This is very difficult. Its SO subjective to Country and a degree of personal preference / unfluences on other bands you like.

As far a root influences, Id have said

Kraftwerk
David Bowie
Blondie
Roxy Music

But as far as big names who sit further along on the new wave time line and also that cross over in to new romantic id say:

Duran Duran
Adam and the Ants
Spandau Ballet
Culture Club

Saw this post back in April and was torn which four to choose.
After looking through my record collection, my answer was
starring right back at me:

Depeche Mode
XTC
Devo
Oingo Boingo


I could have easily chose one of several bands including
Cure, Smiths, OMD, Duran Duran or Kraftwerk, but the four
I chose, I have almost 100% of their output in vinyl.

Let's throw Yello in the mix, Landscape because one of the band members invented the Simmons Electronic Drum, Ultravox (before the album U-Vox) and Duran Duran ( for all the early stuff)
